"Moly Moly Molex"
Hey All,
Here is my dilema.... I have 2x4 pin molex cables that I use for my fans (I have already doubled up on them) and I want to run another 3 pin fan off one of them. I have a 3 to 4 pin molex adapter, what is the best way to do it ! I dont want to do any soldering if I dont have to ( as I'm pants at it) But will be willing if need be.....(Hold on does that sound like a porn advert ?)

Does your 3-4 have a pass thru molex connector? How many fans do you have running on these any way?

Hey Necrosis,
Thx for the reply. I have 2x4pin molex power leads from my power supply, that I use for my fans, each has a molex 4 pin Y splitter, with 2 fans on each. I would like to attach 1 more fan to either on the Y splitter. Yes I do have a pass through molex, also various other connectors to play with. I just aint too sure on how to connect them all together. Or If it is safe for my power supply.

Unless inordinately powerful, it woul take 3-4 fans or more to equal one drive

Matth just means unless you some crazy ass power sucking fans you should be able to add more on.

A "standard" 80mm fan is typically about 0.3 Amp at 12v
A lot of drives are specified as 1.5A on the 12V line, so you can disy-chain 5 of those fans before drawing the same load as one extra drive. Now if you you have kickass fans like the Delta Screamer, it takes a lot less of them to equal one drive load. The point is, it may LOOK like a lot, if you use all those chain connectors, but it isn't. PS. One thing I DO dislike, are those one piece through connectors, with a molex plug and socket at each end of a single plastic body, since it can put a lot of leverage on the drive socket if knocked, or while struggling to insert - the 4 pin Molex is an awful thing, to insert or remove - in a confined case, removal can often be impossible. |

I have found the perfect solution to my problem! No soldering, no adapters, no daisy chains........
"Fan Controller"! How simple was that, it does everything I want. It links all the fans to one 4pin molex and with the added bonus that when I go to bed I can lower the voltage on each fan, thereby reduce the noise of the fans.
