Ok, we'll need more info.

Specifically what brand/model your mobo is. If you don't know, copy down it's BIOS ID as it boots up and I'll try back-tracing it thru that.

Really do need to know what type of MOBO, and CPU cooling you have to get you started. If you have a jumperless set up it will be easy once you understand the basics. I had the PIII 500 Front Side Bus running at 112x5=560 for about 2 years with a low end heatsink and cheap ram.

I used this general guide to get started. There is a wealth of info on the net. Overclocking a PIII

If it is a Gateway, you will not be able to easily overclock it, or overclock at all. Branded computer motherboards come with the bios menu that adjusts the Front Side Bus completely blocked out. There are some software programs that may be used as a work around but I have not tried any of them. (SoftFSB, CPUcool, among others). Or maybe some one here knows how to edit the bios? This is not something I am familar with.

Another option would be buying a good old cheap slot1 board like mine. You can't go wrong with either the Abit BE6-II 2.0 or Asus P3B-F Rev 1.03 or later.

Hopefully someone else here can give you fix. Good Luck

I would be interested in what people have to say. My computer lab let me salvage a p2 400 with a 440bx abit mobo from the to-throw-away heap, and I already have a psu and 4gb seagate lined up for it, just need a case, ram, and vid card, and im set... to overclock! this will be one card i couldn't really care less about toasting though too much overclocking, since p2 400's abound online for under $30...

I've had a PIII-500 running in a P3B-F @ 600 (120FSB) for about two and a half years now (stock heatsink and voltage). Most BX boards in fact did not have overclocking settings in the BIOS. If you got a later Abit or Asus board you might be lucky, but 80% of boards only have jumper settings.

Most 0.25 Katmai cores (like that PIII-500) would do 600~650mhz. The L2 ram chips (located next to the processor on the cartridge) are usually the limiting factor. If you want to get the most out of the processor consider cutting up an old 486 heatsink into pieces and sticking them on with AS epxoy.

The 0.35 Klamath PII cores (PII 233~300) usually tops out at 450~500mhz. The 0.25 Deschutes PII core (PII-333~450) usually tops out at 550~600mhz. Again heatsinks on the L2 ram will help.

It depends on the boards you guys have, but most later i440BX boards will run Tualatin Celerons if you guys ever want a cheap upgrade.

Thanks for the information man! It was really useful. On my 440bx, I'm not seeing any way to change the voltage (so what, I wasn't around during the old skool stuffs ) Are volt mods done to the chip directly, or should I keep searching in the bios/unlabeled jumpers for volt options? Thanks for any help you can provide!

If you can't find anything on the board you can do it on the SECC cartridge.

Who makes the board? What model? (Usually printed between the PCI slots)

What is the sSpec of the CPU? It will be a five digit code that starts with SL _ _ _ printed on the cartridge.

Sorry, but I'm not at home right now - I'm 500 miles away visiting relatives and 500 miles away from my baby... I did that voltage stuffs a couple of weeks ago and I've thought over what I did and can't really think of anything else... I know for a fact that my motherboard was an Abit BP6 (not the second version as far as I can tell)... I don't know the spec on the CPU, I'll check when I get home...
