unlocking xp2000+ - confusing results
today i unlocked my xp2000+ AROIA chip, after a few failed attempts i finally got it unlocked, but i can only choose a few multipliers, which is ok as the one i wanted, 11x, is available.
strangely, windows seems LESS responsive now i have the chip overclocked (11x166=1834MHz) ie. delays opening propert boxes, programs, etc. and my average 3dmark score has become lower. also, my pc does not cold boot every time, but always works after a couple of goes. i dont want to redo the unlock again, as the last time i reseated the hs/f i chipped the corner off the core, but it was only a tiny bit. do you guys think these problems are caused by the new higher bus speed, or perhaps an odd side-effect of chipping the core. i should also point out that the 5:3 fsb/agp divider setting in the bios does not seem to be working (sandra reports too high pci/agp speeds)

Sandra lies, it's a bug in it, and my KX7 doesn't cold boot sometiems as well, but it's rare. U also messed ur unlocking, but if u got ur mutl ur fine. And update ur drivers, that should help, etc.

Oh shit, didn't see u have PC2100, no wonder it's unstable @ 166 FSB, lol

Naughty dasnipe, doubleposting, no, no, no...
Anyway, if its unstable and slower at 166fsb, might I suggest NOT USING IT?! If its slower, having it overclocked couldn't help in the slightest...

True Toshiro, I'm just saying why it's unstable :P

The reason why your system is unstable is because you are overclocking memory that is meant to run at 266 to 333!
With some memory you can get away with this... but usually at slower timings. The base reason why your system is so unresponsive is because the memory cant run properly at that speed. The information that it gets is corrupt... So, the system has to resend the information several times in order for it to get everything correct. You will need PC2700 memory to run at 333! Here is a quick chart of memory names, and the corosponding speeds that they are [i]SUPPOSED[/i to run at: PC1600 = 100Mhz FSB (DDR 200Mhz) PC2100 = 133Mhz FSB (DDR 266Mhz) PC2400 = 150Mhz FSB (DDR 300Mhz) PC2700 = 166Mhz FSB (DDR 333Mhz) PC3000 = 183Mhz FSB (DDR 366Mhz) PC3200 = 200Mhz FSB (DDR 400Mhz) PC3500 = 216Mhz FSB (DDR 433Mhz) PC3700 = 233Mhz FSB (DDR 466Mhz) Your memory needs to match your FSB... Otherwise the memory will freak out, and actually slow your system down... Also making your system unstable. First thing to try is to slow the memory timings. Or if you want to run fast timings get some PC2700 (or faster) that can handle the higher speeds. I would suggest Corsair XMS memory. Good Luck! |

well after 24 hours, and reducing the memory timings my system is now much faster and more responsive, but now it seems my multiplier has locked itself to 11x, which is pretty weird, if i select anything else it just ignores my setting and keeps it at 11x.....
i will be investing in some ddr400 soon as im planning on getting an nforce2 board once the prices drop a bit.... still worried about that chip out of the core but it seems to have had no effect, yet.

What motherboard? I had a KT3 Ultra, and the POS hated 333 FSB, so I got the KX7, works like a charm

I am not sure, but if I recall correctly, it was some ECS P.O.S. that I never expected to do well in the first place...

eww.. esc boards are disgusting, i dont care what anyone says, the k7s5a is a worthless heap of crap... i went thru 4 of them boards before i realised i was wasting my time, and ended up smashing the last one to pieces with a screwdriver after a bad bios flash

yes, ECS sells great paperweights, yet a bit expensive tho...
LMAO On the serious side try a lower fsb speed you may be able to overclock your memory but not that much.. are you useing ramsinks? and really good cpu cooling?

it seems to be pretty much ok for now, ive not had a single crash or anything in the 48 hours since the unlocking, i dont really want to reduce the fsb as id have either an over or under clocked pci bus, and my sblive really doesnt like bein overclocked, and underclocking the agp bus just seems plain silly...
i dont use ramsinks, im under the impression thyre purely aesthetic, as the ram doesnt really get hot, especially compared to the ram on my geforce4... i use a coolermaster x-dream copper based heatsink with a speed adjustable 80mm fan, currently running at 4500rpm (45c full load) my main concern is that my multiplier is now locked to 11x, this seems impossible as it is a 12.5x chip, and ive never heard of such a thing happening to anyone else, but no matter which i select it just ignores my setting and keeps it at 11x, so i cant even go back down to stock speeds (im not risking re-doing the unlock and reseating the hs/f again for fear of destroying my core). so i guess my next point of action will be to buy some nice high-speed ddr...

Well, ramsinks do help as far as distributing the heat goes - RAM does put off a lot of heat when used intensively, and if only certain parts of the ram are being used, they will heat up a lot even if the rest doesn't... which probably isn't good (though it probably doesn't matter that much - thermal difference stressing can't be that bad, can it?)... and why don't you use a shim? Shims are very useful for keeping your core unchipped - I have a 800g heatsink (Swiftech MC-462A) mounted on my Palomino, without any chipping or scratching, thanks to the unique mounting system and the shim...

i think i will buy myself a shim, and maybe even one of those heatsinks that use the holes on the mobo.. will probably go all out and buy some ramsinks too as im sure theyll come in handy when i get my new ram and start pushing it harder..
