antec problem.
can anyone explain to me why when I replaced my generic 300 watt power supply with an antec true power 430, I am no longer able to overclock my machine? I have an ak32l with an athlonxp 2000+, 512 of DDR (2 sticks of 256). Before, I was able to get 1800 mhz with a 150 mhz fsb. That was with lowering my multiplier to 12. I just cannot figure it out. I have 2v going to the processor. Only difference I can tell, is I put it in the antec case, which has more fans. Also replaced the heatsink/fan on the proc. (Heat is not the issue, the xp is running cooler than it was before. ) I can't even get it to post when I drop the multiplier to 10 and push the fsb to 133. I can post and run windows only with "default" set for cpu and ram. any deviance from that is a no post. I wonder if I screwed up my L1 bridges when I put the new sink on. Would that matter? Would it even show the other multiplier settings in bios if i did? Any suggestions?

I think u did, if u cant' switch the multi's, check ur voltages, if they are within specs, it's not ur PSU

Well other than the L1 bridges not being correct anymore (this depends on how you did your unlock and what materials were used).
I went to the ANTEC web page and checked out the specs. First thing that i noticed is that this is a dual fan PSU. My point: There may be a chance that the second fan is drawing warm air over your ram or chipset(northbridge). Second point is this: "Important Notes: • The TruePower Fan Only connectors are designed to power standard fans only. Attaching thermally-controlled fans to these connectors will likely result in unpredictable and undesired behavior. Thermally-controlled fans should only be connected to the standard 4-pin Peripheral Power Connectors. • Please do not connect more than three external fans to the Fan Only connectors in any combination. For maximum cooling you may choose to connect the case fans to the regular 4-pin peripheral connectors, but in this fashion noise will not be reduced. " The above from the specs of your PSU. My point here is that you maybe overloading certain voltage rails resulting in weird behavior of your PSU in general. Now these are only a few thoughts of mine but worth looking into. so basiclly there are 3 possibilties. a) overheating of ram or chipset b)L1 bridges not as they were c) bad PSU or incorrect usage of its rails. |

Thanks for the input, guys. I think I figured it out in the mean time, though....I word of advice...If you ever get case fans with bare wires (no connectors on the end), make damn sure you are splicing into the 5V line, and not the 12 volt....
LOL I knew better, I just wasn't paying attention what the hell I was doing! Damn I feel like an ass. |

umm... why exactly? i would never have case fans drawing on my precious 5v line!! plus the fans are usually rated at 12v anyways..
i dont understand how that couldve solved the problem..

...ok...maybe I got it backwards...the red one is 12v? or is it 5? I had it connecting to the yellow, re-spliced it so it hooks to the red side (like all the rest of my fans do) and then the problem disappeared...?

...ok looking around I see that yes, fans are rated at 12v, and yes the red wire is the 5v line. So why would that fix my problem?....

well most of your computers important bits, such as the cpu, memory, pci cards, etc. run on the 5v rail, and if there was too much pull on this line the supply to your cpu would be reduced or become unstable (fluctuating), therefore reducing your chances of pulling a stable overclock...
oh, and u might wanna sort out that double-post..
