Removed 9700 Pro shim
Well I got bored today so I ripped out my 9700 Pro and did some modding. The heatsink is held on by 2 piece plastic pins, so it was easy to remove. The TIM on the heatsink is disturbingly thick, I assume to make up for the gap between the shim and the core. I scraped it off and replaced it with a coat of TherMagic grease (trust me this stuff is MUCH better than AS3). The shim is held on by glue and a quick flip of a knife blade popped it off. After I cleaned everything off, I put the heatsink back on with the pins. One thing I noticed is if you put pressure on the heatsink on a corner that doesn't have a pin, it will move
Now I see why they had the shim on there in the first place.![]() Anyway I did some testing and now I can overclock my core an additional 7mhz or so. Not as much as I hoped. Guess the shim on mine didn't keep the heatsink from touching the core too much. Anyone else have experiences with removing the shim? |

Eeeew.
That is goofy! I'm still trying to figure out their logic for the shim being like that, it just seems like an akward bit-o-engineering to me.

That is an exposed core -- a shim only makes sense.

I have just one thing to say about using the TherMagic grease.
There are warnings everywhere about not using this on an aluminum heatsink... So... exactly why did you put this stuff on an aluminum HSF? Just curious... And BTW... you might want to put that shim back on :P |

That's exactly the first thing I noticed myself when I took the shim off. I use AS3 but still can't get the core over 345MHz-very disappointed since others get it to 370 and above. The freakin mem can go up to 740MHz though. If you don't mind me asking, what clocks are you running at? |

I run at 370/340 now kakarot.
Justin are you sure about the aluminum thing? I can't find anything about it (you'd think it would say it on the packaging for the grease). |

Actually, as far as I can see, Evergreen frowns upon using this compound on BARE aluminum. Adonized aluminum is, apparently, fine.

Pagh.
Nanotherm Blue II or generic white stuff for me thanks. (Mainly 'cause those are currently the ones on me shelf.
