Well, a friend of mine has an Akasa Silver Mountain 2Q and swears by it - I would suggest looking around for review on it and seeing how good it is (I would find a link or two but I'm leaving for a bit ) and also looking at the HSF battle at THG (posted on the front page), though take some of that with a grain of salt and also remember that they test stuffs there that aren't necesarily available widely in the US...

EDIT: 2Q meaning its the quiet version...

Um, when I had my 2100 it ran 49-53 idle........I couldn't get it lower. Todd....I have a badass heatsink/fan....don't expect to get temps lower than 50C. I wouldn't suggest going for more cooling. You won't get much results temperature wise.

don't overclock.....or if you do. Unlock the cpu and then increase the FSB (front side bus speed (the speed the CPU runs at before multiplied)) So instead of 133 * 13 like you have right now...it can be something like 145*12......or if your memory can take it..166*10....or 166*10.5

Well Driveeuro, I don't know what to tell you... except that this "badass" HSF you have must really, really, really suck. I have one of the Swiftech MC462-A's, monstrous HSF's, damn badass, and I often see CPU temps at around ambient+8 (20C on cold nights, 35C on really hot days with the AC on...), with it very rarely going above this. More cooling DOES make a difference, trust me - just maybe not as much with the Palomino you have...

for the graphics card, you didn't give a manufacturer for it nor model... so what gpu do you have? I can tell you about gpu overclocking too, but I'd need to know the gear first

Ah, well, I would suggest downloading one of the various overclocking utilities available from www.guru3d.com like Powerstrip or whatever suits your fancy - just make sure it works with the 9700. Then do the same thing - overclock a bit, then a bit more, then when things get a bit unstable, back off a bit and then test for stability...

Any time - and lack of sleep? Its only 2am (maybe more for you...) - how bad can it be Have a good night of sleep - you don't want to make a really bad mistake like overclocking your card to 500/2000 and then setting the "set on startup" option Remember, core errors will give you freezing and that sort of thing and memory errors will give you damaged textures, damaged models, damaged animations, etc. but not necesarily freezes, so keep that in mind as you start to hit the limits

sounds like a good idea - what is the point of overclocking and modding and tweaking if you don't use the system? Don't spend more time tuning the car than driving it, I say

Well, in my house the house thermostat is set at 68-70F. Take into account that my room is that temp...windows closed. I have the fan only running at 4000rpm. You don't see many 2100 that run colder than that with minimal noise and not so many case fans. Lets put it this way .... Todd prolly aint got a lotta fans all over his case cuz he says he's a n00b. But for a 20$ heatsink/fan I believe it can't get too much better than that. Remember he's a n00b. He doesn't have zillions of fans. Prolly doesn't leave his room really cold (window open). Just for normal everday use temps below mine aren't necessary. Let's leave it at this. AMD says that their chips can operate up to 90C (some of them). Todd doesn't need to freak out if his cpu goes over 50. Cuz his idle temps are already 50...like mine were. Damn, I lost track. fuck this.

True, but higher temperatures just in general are bad things...

But he won't get his temps lower than than 50C when overclocked on a normal heatsink. I was able to get 47C I think with the 2100xp and my volcano 9 running at full throttle

Your right i dont have a zillion fans one thing i have done until i get me some better cooling is put a small house fan on the case to help blow in cold air and i used powerstrip this morning to overclock my 9700 so far it is 370core/330 mem and running rock solid i think later i am going to push it a little harder
