Help required: My P3 733 won't go beyond 814Mhz, volt 1.85- able to go to 1.95
I was trying to get my P3 733 to 900mhz or more but it failed, It won't go beyond 814Mhz..
Specs: Asus Cuv4x mobo Intel P3 733hmz 512Mb Ram Geforce 256 SDR 32 MB (yeah I know it needs to be replaced) FSB 148 Mult: 5.5 (locked) Volt current @ 1.85 will go to 1.95 if necessary Won't boot above 148fsb Last edited by Martijno2000; Jan 22, 2003 at 08:06 PM. |

I think you got a bad one, I have a pIII700 that can hit 1045 with 1.80v (its unstable up their though) at 980 with 1.75v its solid.

if you have an original stepping processor then chances are it wont overclock very high, id say you did well to push it that far. Back when intel and amd were racing to be the first chip make to come up with a 1GHz chip they were releasing processors like crazy, if they could push another 66MHz with a few tweaks on the current architecture they would release it to the public, just to get the speed advantage.
a few things you should consider while overclocking: is your ram running way out of spec? ie.trying to run pc100 at 148fsb. if so, try increasing the latency timings and see if you can go any higher. do you have any old pci or isa cards? try removing them from the rig and see if u can go higher without them. do you use a stock heatsink and fan? stock cooling gear is usually only just capable of cooling the processor it came with. you will most likely get better results if you bought a powerful cooler but nothings guaranteed. is your psu 250w or lower? if so, the power supply to your processor could become unstable when running at higher voltages due to underpowered voltage rails. Dont worry if people have similar processors to you but are getting far better overclocks. when a new stepping for a cpu is made all they do is underclock it to xMHz, put xMHz on the box and sell them for less. this is common practice with both intel and amd as it saves a heck of a lot in production costs. Oh yeah, and i wouldnt bother getting a new graphics card for that rig cos itll just run like shit.. you really wanna have a faster system overall to be able to play most current and future games.

My RAM is 133 and running @ 148 cas3 now, even with a divider when the RAM is running @ 110+ it won't get any higher..814 is the max even with my Zalman CU cooler 90mm fan...I guess It's just a bad sample of the P3
and btw I've got a chieftec 360Watt PSU so....... P3 733 Asus Cuv4x mobo 512mb 133 Geforce 256 32mb (yeah It's old) Creative Audigy Plextor 24x12x40 Lite-on 16x DVD Chieftec 360Watt Zalman CU cooler 90mm fan |

Zalman coolers are ment for quiet operation of a processor running at stock clock speeds. They are not meant for overclocking of any kind.
Also @ 148Mhz your AGP would be running at 74Mhz, and your PCI would be running at 37 Mhz ... that AGP clock is a little too far out of wack... many AGP cards do not like running at that high of a clock speed. |

My p3 800 wouldn't run more than 878 (146 fsb), although it did this undervolted! 1.6 instead of 1.75 default. Stepping 068A (if I remember well, anyway, the last of the CuMines). However, in the same setup, the Tualeron reaches 121 MHz FSB (~40MHz PCI, instead of previous ~36.5) - same r7200 ddr.
On board peripherals (ABit ST-6) stop working at +10%FSB. A friend of mine has a Geforce I (but ddr) that runs on an oced BX440, about 44MHz PCI, I guess it's a matter of luck (and manufacturer, Leadtek for him). If you have two sticks of RAM, try removing the second one (keep the one closest to the chipset). Also note that: Quote:
And check temperatures!

CPU temp is very low.... Idle about 17-20c , load max 30-35c

The fact that your P3 is a 133MHz chip alone pretty much limits your overclock. If you are feeling the need to upgrade, you could get easily snatch a low-cost motherboard and an Athlon XP 1700+ for $100.
