Pissed Can't enable DMA on CDRW since I got this ABIT NF7

Grrrrrrrr. So I need to burn a CD. I can't enable DMA in the bios. In the bios it's either "Automatic" or "Disabled" for DMA. And for PIO it's Auto, Mode 0, Mode 1, Mode 2, Mode 3, or Mode 4. For some reason I can' run DMA on the CDRW since I got this NF7. In windows the CDRW will not write unless I det the IDE cable to "PIO only Mode." It's boggin down my PC. Anyone got a clue how to get DMA enabled again? This is annoying.

Damn, I've reinstalled Windows 2 times in the last two weeks. I don't wanna do it again. I'm on 56k so when I have to update stuff it takes a while. Yes I removed devices and rebooted. I did that with DMA off and also with DMA on. So I have NO clue.

ok, i just had to make sure you hadnt installed the mobo without re-installing windows aswell (a lot of people seem to do this, and it causes endless problems)

next thing i would try would be to try different combinations or drives on the ide cables, ie. cd-rw on its own, cd-rw on the same channel as a hard drive, or any other drive.. just move it around and see what happens.

there has to be a logical explanation to this, if it worked before theres no good reason for it to not work now. its happened to me a few time but it was alway fixed using any of the above solutions.

oh yeah, and check your IDE leads thoroughly, they arent indestructible and they could have been damaged when you fitted the new mobo.

Update EVERYTHING that you update from windows update website..... And also I am not totally sure if it did work since I got this new mobo. But this is the first time I've used it to burn since I got the mobo.

oh yeah, you should also try throwing somone else's cdrw in there (under the exact condition in which the current drive will not work proplerly) and see if it does the same thing, or even just a standard cd-rom drive might be enough.

Well here's the real problem... It doesn't enable DMA from intial boot up. When booting up it says that the CD-RW is running in PIO Mode 4...... So I cannot do anything through windows.... DOS already put it as PIO 4....

Actually I did do that... But I have reformatted once since I got the new mobo... I did not do it the day I got it...but I did do it a couple days later cuz I clocked the thing too fast and it made the hard disk corrupt.

The new firmware didnt help, new BIOS didnt help, new cable?

I dont know Euro, you may want to look at trying another drive, it may just be incompatable (seems strange) but I have had it happen before.

Last but not least, email the motherboard company, and the burner company... see what they have to say...

Good Luck!

Actually, a lot of CD-RWs work better in PIO 4 mode. I know that most Ricoh drives and Plextor drives actually prefer you to run in PIO 4 for better burning.

Truth be told, my drive "supports" UDMA 33, but functions best (and at default) in PIO mode...although, I'm perplexed as to why it won't function in XP properly...mine works find without setting to PIO only mode in windows. Hmm...

Here's the deal. The drive used to run ing DMA on my old AV7-133 mobo. But on this NF7 it runs PIO 4. Why is that bad you ask? Cuz PIO requires much more clock cycles to write. It bogs down the computer incredibly. I can live with it in PIO....but I'd prefer DMA.

Then it is MoBo problem - which IDE drivers are you using? Windows standard on NVIDIA's?

Not sure - but from what I heard XP standard driver is recommended over NVIDIA's one... tried this way?

HAHAHAHA, nice description. I just checked firmware as soon as I noticed this problem two weeks ago. I doubt that there is a new firmware again.
