Canada Nab 17 Terror Suspects

http://apnews.myway.com/article/20060603/D8I11TKO0.html
Quote:
TORONTO (AP) - Canadian police foiled a homegrown terrorist attack by arresting 17 suspects, apparently inspired by al-Qaida, who obtained three times the amount of an explosive ingredient used in the Oklahoma City bombing, officials said Saturday.

The FBI said the Canadian suspects may have had "limited contact" with two men recently arrested on terrorism charges in Georgia. About 400 regional police and federal agents participated in the arrests Friday and early Saturday.

"These individuals were allegedly intent on committing acts of terrorism against their own country and their own people," Prime Minister Stephen Harper said in a statement. "As we have said on many occasions, Canada is not immune to the threat of terrorism."

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrested 12 adult suspects, ages 43 to 19, and five suspects younger than 18 on terrorism charges including plotting attacks with explosives on Canadian targets. The suspects were either citizens or residents of Canada and had trained together, police said.

The group acquired three tons of ammonium nitrate - three times the amount used to blow up the Murrah Federal Building on April 19, 1995, in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people and injured more than 800, said assistant Royal Canadian Mounted Police commissioner Mike McDonell. The fertilizer can be mixed with fuel oil or other ingredients to make a bomb.

"This group posed a real and serious threat," McDonell said. "It had the capacity and intent to carry out these attacks."

This would make me laugh if it werent so sad.

Don't many muslums heap westerners as 'infidels'? If this is not true. Their muslum leaders should dispell such notions. But I havent heard any public denial of this. All I hear is 'the kuran doesnt support murder' - thats it. Besides that - isnt the kuran open for interpretation? - if it weren't, these extemists would not be calling them selves 'muslums' - nor follow the kuran.

An yet muslums DO choose to live among us - did they ever consider that us 'infidels' wonder why this is.

I know, NOT all muslums are terrorists - but its obvious, that a problem exists within their teachings, that DOES harvest hate, or is TOO open to be interpreted as such. Yet it doesnt appear to be any movement on the muslums part to dispell this notion.

So, to all muslums - if you want us 'infidels' to stop lumping all muslums as terrorists - how about being more active in dispelling these related 'mis-conceptions', that are becomming all too familiar first.

Or have the extremists start wearing signs or badges, so we can differentiate between the 'rational' and the 'radical' - but we know how (im)possible THIS is.

Until then - deal with being lumped in. Work harder to dispell our mis-conceptions. Take an active role in weeding out the extremists and the prevention of such horrific acts done in your faiths name.

The old saying ' If your not part of the solution, your part of the problem'.

That seems rather harsh dont you think. I am happy that the captures were made before anything nasty took place.

I love the fact that I can walk the street without automatic weapon fire being the norm!

I took it as pompey was quoting the suspects - not as his own sentiment.

But yes, its a little confusing.

lol It wasn’t an actual quote (Should have attached a disclaimer I guess)

I get that message whenever I hear these extremists talk, that they are sick of the way they are stereotyped and that they are just trying to convey this frustration. It is also used by people who are moderates, but are trying to explain (if not justify) why they did it.

Why cant extremist Muslims do the same thing as some fundamentalist Christians: commit mass suicide somewhere in the American mid-west.

BTW: Western teenagers are doing their bit in the fight against radical Islam (see! we can do suff!). We had 2 refugees from the Iraq war at our school. Within a few months neither were Muslim. I can say the same for the Somalian refugee's, although some of them still wear a table cloth.

DISCLAIMER: Im not sure what those things on their heads are (Its kinda different from a Hijab I think) so whenever I see a girl wearing one, its a Table cloth. Arab Men wear Tea towels.

I *think* your refering to 'Heavens Gate' - were not christians, but a very small (39) group of 'cultists' who *claimed* to have christian belief parallels. (and to me - is *almost* just as sad, and not a good answer for a 'civilized' society)

It's interesting how many mass murders/deaths occur a direct or in-direct result from a very deep seeded religious belief. You never hear about mass murder being about conflicting scientific theories, now do we?

A source of the quote would have made it clearer. I surmised it wasn't your sentiment from the quotes around it - but without the source, it open for interpretations.

just to make myself clear sorry if things were misunderstood, I thought about the quotes but was still uncertain of the context

And because this incident happened in the country I live in I was feeling uncertain

IMO, i think all the bomber are idiots.. or the "leaders" suggestion places to bomb... it just doesn't make any sense tatically.... what are they doing? nothing.

If they were seriously intent on screwing us over, they would bomb out water supplies... our dams..... out grain cylos..... i find it absalutely ironic that they bomb a building with 10s-100s-1000s of people in it and claim a victory in any sense.

And no, Muslims are not responcible at all, if anything, they are preventing it, it's the insanely retarded freaks out there doing it.
