Dr. Dino arrested

The Pensacola Young-Earth Creationist Kent Hovind, who calls himself Dr. Dino (although he has no college degree) has been arrested on 58-count federal indictment. Charges include failing to pay employee income taxes and illegally making repeated withdrawls to avoid federal bank reporting requirements (i.e. Smurfing). Apparently Hovind does not consider himself a US citizen and does not believe he is under the jurisdiction of the US government. Therefore he did not feel the need to pay any taxes whatsoever...for the last 17 years. He claims to have no income, that all of his money belongs to God and he is just allowed to make use of it however he wishes. He undertook a failed bid a few years ago to illegally file for bankruptcy despite the apparently hundreds of thousands of dollars he was making a year. He has also been charged with interfering with a federal investigation, filing false and frivilous lawsuits and complaints and making threats to impede the IRS investigation of his activities.

His grand jury indictment was ordered sealed by the court. It was felt that because of the large stash of weapons he had arresting him could pose a danger to the officers involved. The guns were later seized by the court, over Hovind's objections that they belong to his church. The judge also took his passport, fearing that he could pose a flight risk if allowed to leave the country.

Hovind's has a young-earth creationism themed amusement park and "museum" and sells videos, books and CD's on the subject. His visitor center and museum are currently closed over Hovind's refusal to get a building permit for an objection. Apparently the local judge did not consider the argument that building permits violate Hovind's religious beliefs a valid argument.

Hovind has entered his plea. He has plead "subornation of false muster". This plea is not a valid legal term and doesn't appear in legal dictionaries, nor is it recognized by US courts, but basically means Hovind doesn't think the US government has the authority to charge him with a crime, arrest him, or try him in a court of law. He initially refused to enter a legitimate plea but ultimately plead not-guilty "under duress".

Hovind is repsonsible for the rigged $250,000 award to anyone who can "prove evolution". The award is actually only to be awarded to those who disprove the existence of an omnipotent God, which is not possible (although this has not stopped people from trying). He claims he will send all entries to an unnamed committee for review, but as of yet few, if any, of the entries sent to Hovind have been sent to the committee. Hovind's refusal to name the committee members or give any indication of their background or area of expertise also calls into question their neutrality or ability to adequately critique claims.

I normally don't take pleasure in the misfortune of others, but if it is someone I really don't like and the misfortune is totally self-inflicted and wholly deserving like in this case I see no problem. I have little sympathy for someone who overtly and publicly flouted the law for close to two decades and finally got arrested for it, especially when the person made his living wholly on lies and manipulation.

i forget which sect of christianity is doing this, but there's one i saw a special on the history channel (mormons i think) where they donate all their money to the church and don't have a dime to their name, but they rake in thousands. it also mentioned that they refuse to pay taxes to a diabolical or some terminology of that sort government.

Well, it is all over. After 3 hours of deliberation, a federal jury found "Dr." and Mrs. Hovind guilty on all counts. He could face up to 288 years in prison for the 58 charges levied against him, and his wife up to 225 years for her 44 charges. The trial was over more quickly then expected when the defense rested after providing no evidence and not calling a single witness.

There are many people will excuse anything as long as it is done in the name of their religion.
