INNOCENT VICTIMS OF BRUTAL CONFRONTATION

Apr 2 2003

By Stephen Moyes

HIS face contorted with grief, an inconsolable father mourns the loss of his family - wiped out by US missiles yesterday.

Razzaq Kazem al-Khafaj wept for the lives of 15 of his family, including his wife, six children, his mother and father and two brothers.

Wracked with despair, he paced around the rough wooden boxes holding their blanket-wrapped bodies.

Razzaq's family was obliterated when missiles from US helicopters hit their car near Hilla, 70 miles south of Baghdad.

He had led his family out of their home town of Nassariya, in a bid to escape fierce fighting there.

A hospital employee later claimed the civilian dead in the bombing totalled 33, while another 310 people were injured.

People at the scene screamed: "What has he done wrong, what has he done wrong? God take our revenge on America."

Some claimed that US troops shelled the town only after being pushed back by Iraqi forces.

The battle between American soldiers and Iraqi militia and Republican Guard - near the site of ancient Babylon - was the closest confrontation yet to Baghdad.

Crowds of people gathered to join grief-stricken victims.

Saddam loyalists lost no time in using the incident to help rally Iraqis to fight the coalition forces.

The regime's information minister Saeed al-Sahaf whipped up anti-American feeling during a press conference in Baghdad.

He told reporters: "The Americans are racists, so they started killing the Iraqis indiscriminately."

Sahaf also claimed that 56 civilians had died in coalition air attacks on Baghdad.

He added that Basra, Iraq's second biggest city, was still under the control of forces loyal to Saddam.

Back near Hilla, Razzaq was a broken man, crouching by the remains of his lost loved ones.

The bodies were later loaded on to the back of a rusty old pick-up truck and taken away for burial.

i`ll rephrase my question:if you were him wouldnt you revenge?

Daily Mirror

This sounds like and feels like more yellow journalism from the Daily Mirror....Moyes is just about as reactionary a writer as any of them...only worse..and a harsh critic of Blair and Bush....where are you going with this? This is clearly emotional driven writing?

The best way of writing about war is being emotional driven..... i figure....Yeah i could understand him wanting revenge...absolutley.But...as his state is now i hardly think he is capable of anything at all.

Between 500-600 civilians are so far killed in this war............................

I dont understand Jeff how you can react to this as "yellow journalism..."...The facts speak clearly to themselves dont they??

I mean...who would dream of calling...any...article written on any of the victims of Sept 11 as "Yellow journalism"?

The images and the story says it all and it hardly needs any comments at all as i see it.

no no no no

clinical detachment and objectively...otherwise you might just write anything to raise interest in the story, regardless of the facts...

a break from the tension...hee hee

-War Protesters
To nobody's surprise there were protesters today in DC, they attempted to disrupt the metro system and block the Key Bridge, a leading artery into DC from Northern Virginia. I got hosed twice because I come in from NoVA on the metro and it is raining hard which makes traffic worse any way. My commute was long and arduous and only caused further resentment for protesters (but that isn't the point of this thread). Anyway, I'll get to the point.
I got off my train in Rosslyn because I had to use the bathroom and the train was moving quite slowly. When I was getting back on the train, there were protesters on the train platform handing out pamphlets on the evils of America. I politely declined to take one. An elderly woman was behind me getting off the escalator and a young (20ish) female protester offered her a pamphlet, she politely declined. The young protester put her hand on the old woman's shoulder as a gesture of friendship and in a very soft voice said, "Ma'am, don't you care about the children of Iraq?"
The old woman looked up at her and said, "Honey, my first husband died in France during World War II so you could have the right to stand here and bad mouth your country. And if you touch me again, I'll stick this umbrella up your a$$ and open it."
I'm glad to report that loud applause broke out among the onlookers and the young protester was at a total loss for words

OMG The funniest thing I've read all day. I bet she would have done it too.

Actually i dont see the connection between her husband and civilians dying anywhere on the planet.

She has got a right to dismiss any peacenik in the world but there is no logic anywhere saying that she is more right than the peacenik.

It is just a mere example of someone being nationalistic and separating her own grief from the grief of others by a shield of nationalism.
