Palin: Iraq war 'a task that is from God'
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin told ministry students at her former church that the United States sent troops to fight in the Iraq war on a "task that is from God."

Well that's exactly why I dislike Palin and most of the republican party. They think they are some holy elite, and they speak to god more then any of us mere mortals. I am so sick and tired of people getting elected simply because "they love jesus and fuck their wives" to quote Bill Maher.

I can easily replace the word "republican" with "democrat" if I wanted to as well and it would be equally as valid. As for Palin, whether she really said that or not, she is echoing the sentiments of many of her constituents so I am not surprised whether it was taken out of context or not. I am beginning to see a trend among so called enthusiastic democrats and republicans where a bias is expressed as a political view rather than just what is more accurately a real lack of knowlege about American Politics and a bias against what is or is not popular on television. Americans could easily be called a nation of WHINERS and COMPLAINERS. If you accuse any one political party then the assumption is that you are an "expert" or enthusiasticly support a political movement or leader. Just trying to be an honest or informed voter for many Americans is hard enough. Its just easier to complain or whine about something that took Americans and their government two hundred years to deliver to nation at large. With the amount of information available to any one eager to learn what motivates political movements in America, then more enlightened responses from Americans or non - Americans should be forthcoming but the opposite is unfortunately true. When this forum becomes a place to say "I hate them" or " I dislike" some party or person surely there should be some content to re-enforce a persons position, but unfortunately it seems that most remarks are bereft of any salient points. I dont particulerly care for any remarks about any political party that are driven by an obviously personal like or dislike without anything to back it up. Frankly what I have seen is really bad information googled or wiki'd from the web either out of context or terribly inaccurate and serves no purpose except to take a proverbial "baseball bat to a mailbox" or a "drive by". Rubbish. Americans are becoming a nation of whiners and complainers, and I hear that from my foreign friends, who themselves face Socialist iniatives from theyre respective governments as time passes on. I am beginning to think that people want to shift the blame and responsibility from themselves and squarely on the shoulders of Political leaders and perhaps that is perfectly understandble, since what most people dont understand they fear. Politics is a strange animal and thrives and survives on ignorance, fear and the mob. If there is anything I have learned from my nearly fifty years of life is that nothing and I mean absolutely nothing has changed in my country in terms of politics except that there is more "disinformation" now rather than "information". Americans have it pretty damn good now, regardless of who is in charge, and our biggest challenge is remain focused on what is important on the day we vote rather than useless banter about what he said or what she said. I hope poeple can see the humour in the coming elections, because I sure can, and regardless of who is "in charge" I will still prepare to take of myself and place very few real expectations on my government.

It's not a narrow view, It's a Electoral College Fact. Since when do the democrats win the bible belt? Republicans prey on evangelical (sp?) and christian voters.
And We're a nation of whiners and complainers, how narrow is that view? Have you lived outside the states for that long? Do you know how many single women work their ass off and take care of children with no complaints? But oh no Sarah Palin is special, because she has a down syndrome kid. Bullshit, Many Mothers are born with special needs children, and should be helped quite a bit more, but do they complain, no. Your whole statement could be viewed as a whine about whiney people, which is exactly why it's not an argument at all. Your cynical view of the government doesn't foster an ability to advocate change within it, therefore you're only giving the government more power the things you wish it would not obtain. My way of thinking isn't narrow, my opinion of people and how they live their lives thinking they're better simply because they're pro-life and Pro-jesus however is. |

Do not believe everything you read... that quote is taken completely out of context.
What was actually said (to ministry students) was "pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right, also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending them out on a task that is from God, that's what we have to make sure that we are praying for, that there is a plan, and that plan is God's plan". Or in summary, to pray that our leaders are sending them (the troops) out on a 'task that is from God'. Support whom-ever you want to, but do try to get the facts right. |

A task from God?! Thank heavens, and here I thought it was something created by a group of politicians with massive personal holdings in oil companies try to secure assets in a key location in the largest oil producing area of the world. Imagine my relief to now realize that it's Divine Intervention and not dishonesty on behalf of the most powerful men in the world abusing their roles.
Thank you Ms. Palin and what more of a reason for you to be VP, you can speak to God. Now that is some real executive experience. |

I had the feeling for quite some time now that the politicians have nothing to do with running any government so in my mind it matters not what any of them say. When lobbyists to big business have to run for election I feel a more accurate reflection of those truly in power will present itself. Call me cynical but everything else seems part of a tragic circus.

Say what you want about the failings of the Democrats (usually infidelity
) but one thing they've consistently never been is Bible thumping fools. Bush also believed that God was guiding him in the Iraq war and look how that turned out. One of the few things I like about McCain is that he's not dumb enough to believe God has any plans in Iraq but unfortunately for him the Republican party is in bed with the Evangelicals (polite term for "mass of fools") and he needed Palin to bring in those votes. If he does win let's hope that McCain relegates her to unimportant tasks and uses his judgement rather than faith to make decisions.

It is taken out of context because the quote is taken from the middle instead of the beginning.
"our national leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God" has a completely different meaning than "pray that ____ our national leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God", and if you somehow missed that point, the very next sentence ("that's what we have to make sure that we are praying for") should have made it quite clear. Anyone should be able to clearly see that she is basically saying to pray that we are doing the right thing, that's it... |

BTW: I am not religious, and I never said that I supported Palin or anyone else (for that matter, I completely disagree with her stance on some issues (as I do with some issues that other candidates stand for)). All I was saying is, that if people are going to report something as news, it should be accurate. If you have a problem with another part of the speech, then quote that, but do not take quotes and mis-represent them (whether you are a republican, democrat, independant, or whatever). |

It's always ignorant to think god plays favorites whatever Higher power is there, I think he's above the human moral compass. So for idiots to say shit like they do, and how prayers do these wonderful things.... You're not god, stop defining him. And Yes, the republicans do pump out the bible thumping votes, because that's mostly where you find that socially conservative masses. You know, the 5 wives, we're all cousins and We rode the dinosaurs crowd.

Sad part is her comments on Iraq got brushed aside whereas Obama uses an old expression about lipstick on a pig and the McCain team is telling the world how disgusting and sexist Obama is. I'd hope no one actually believes that but if they do then America is in more trouble than I thought.

Not only that but Mccain is running Anti-obama ads that Obama is pro sex education for kindergardeners, I always loved how republicans being dicks is "okay" but everyone calls the dems pussies, they fight, and all of a sudden HEY WAIT! you can't fight back.

I'm very disappointed that McCain is stepping up the Carl Rove style lies and deceit. I thought he was above that.

Americans must give the Republicans a good kicking on November 4 | Anatole Kaletsky - Times Online
May interest you. Not saying I agree with it, not saying I don't. Just thought it might interest you. For the record though, the Republicans are a right wing party. Right wing = moraly wrong IMO. I do agree with their climate change outlook though. Hmm, I may get some heated replies for this. |

Wow, I got neg rep'd in this thread? I dunno who did it so I'll just have to make a point of being extra critical of Republicans and the Religious Right in future threads

If people are negatively repping you in a debate thread that obviously shows they can't handle the debate, must be republicans, next they'll be saying you want to teach sex education to children, under the age of 2.
