OpEd: This is an election you wouldn't want to win
It's interesting as I've been debating this concept with friends and relatives already. The winner of 2008's pres. election may in fact be the loser.
_________ Source: Times Online It is highly probable that that moment, the very hour that he takes office, will be the high point of his presidency. Whoever wins on November 4 will be ascending to the job at one of the most difficult times for an American chief executive in at least half a century. When the votes are counted his people might ruefully conclude that the victor is not Barack Obama or John McCain. The real winner will be Hillary Clinton, or Mitt Romney, or Mike Huckabee, or some now happily anonymous figure whose star will rise in the next four turbulent years. |

No doubt about it, Bush left America in a sorry state and it's unlikely any of the candidates will be able to clean up the mess in their first term while still accomplishing their election promises.
As sad as it is, America got what it deserved by re-electing the guy who already set them on this current path. This was no accident waiting to happen, it's the consequences of 8 years of terrible decision making and incompetent leadership. American's have paid for their mistakes more than enough and deserve a break; they deserve a candidate who has some imagination and can inspire them to get out of this rut. One guess who that is?

The GOP went into this election facing an almost certain loss, no matter who they ran you just can't erase the last 8 years from the minds of the voters. I don't think the GOP wants to lose control at all and are willing to take risks such as running McCain (who isn't exactly far right) and then further risk the country itself by putting an unqualified token female on the card as a last ditch effort to stay alive. To me, it doesn't look like they're giving this election to the Democrats at all...it'll be a dirty fight right until the end.
