Shoot first ask questions later so it seems. It's unfortunate but if the squirt gun was a realistic imitation i can't say the sheriff was totally in the wrong.

even IF it looked like a real on.... shooting is saposed to be a last resort.... they've got stun related weapons that would have knocked the kid out....
it's all bullshit..

Re: Young teenager SHOT by police and arrested for having a toy gun...
He aimed a gun that had been purposely disguised to look like a real gun at police.
The article said it had the orange tip painted black. Now, I'm not an expert on squirt guns, but they're generally bright colours, and don't look at all like real guns. Squirt gun: Airsoft guns on the other hand, can be gotten as replicas of pretty much any real gun, except they have an orange tip. If the orange tip is painted black, there's no way to tell if you're about to get shot with a real bullet, or if a kid is playing around. if you're talking about Tazer's the have an effective range of less than 5-8m, and other "non-lethal" methods are less than that again
If you were a law officer in their situation, with someone with "special needs" as stated in the article waving arounda weapon that from a distance of greater than a few metres probably looks quite real (no orange cap), well you've got a duty to protect yourself and those around you

1. They were responding to a call on a burglerly. 2. There had been reports of someone on a bicycle brandishing a hand gun. 3. They pull him over, see the gun ( which had been modified to look real) and tell him to drop it. 4. Instead of dropping it, he POINTS IT AT THEM. I'm sure that the policeman that shot him isn't feeling all that good about the shooting now, after all of the facts are known, but when it happened, he didn't have those facts. All he saw something that looked like a threat to his life, and he took the only option available to him. If anyone in this case ia a victim, it's the policeman, as he's going to feel guilty over this when there was really nothing else he could do.

It's not 100% about the fact that he was shot.. it was where he was shot that is rediculious....

Re: Young teenager SHOT by police and arrested for having a toy gun...
Having actually done the job, I can understand that it happens. Its was in the evening, so visibility was low or non-existent. They boy refused an order to put the weapon down, and instead pointed it at the officers. My only complaint is that they shot him once. I was taught to double-tap and aim center mass. The kid gave them intent, opportunity, and capability everything required for deadly force. Whether it was a toy or not, the officers are not completely to blame for the incident. The kid of was a complete idiot and he paid for it.
I feel sorry for the officer, as he has to live with that for the rest of his life. Last edited by vicsrealms; May 13, 2009 at 07:36 AM. |
