The deal in Haiti...
Hi all!
Just I've been pondering how to bring stability and peace to Haiti. The country has been depending foreign aid for over a century. So what are you thoughts how to make that country stabile. I'm thinking that UN should take control over Haiti for as long as the basic infrastructure has been done and people are ready for take care for them selves. |

Re: The deal in Haiti...
I thought the UN was doing that already, their building was destroyed in the quake and quite a few of the UN's people were killed or still missing, they had a very large presence there. Seems I read they were there doing what you just suggested..... Maybe I'm wrong about that
I know it's easier and quicker to mobilize the military than other sources but I'm a little creeped out about the way the US (yeah my country) just "invaded" Haiti...... looks like somebody is thinking "free territory" May as well have 51 stars on that flag...... (no I don't agree with that idea, but it looks very possible at the moment.)

Re: The deal in Haiti...
Forgive my ignorance, but is there a country wherein the UN took over and stability and peace ensued?

Re: The deal in Haiti...
Probably not, but that is what they are supposed to be able to do....

Re: The deal in Haiti...
UN does have its use when responding to emergencies--natural and man-made. Its several agencies have been of big help to our country.
I'm not familiar with the Haiti situation prior to the earthquake. I'm just not that convinced that UN can provide better governance by taking over a whole country as what temeteus82 is thinking... |

Yes but they weren't on charge. The local government was. And that is only peacekeepers and the police officers in there to train the local police. |

Re: The deal in Haiti...
True, I was just looking to see what they were there doing, I knew they had a rather large presence but not their role or exact numbers.

Re: The deal in Haiti...
a corrupt land, government and no compass to plot a course with. Drug lords rule the country, that is an absolute fact. Crime is rampant, and pollution is going to force the people out anyway. Their culture struggles with an identity crisis, brought on not by themselves, but by all the special interests that exploit the country.
Its time for a hard reboot for this country, and the earthquake surely wont do it. if the people cannot rule themselves, it is just a matter of time. Anyone that is familiar with the origins of the island nation know that strife has been a part of life since the first government.

Re: The deal in Haiti...
What bugs me is no matter what is done to recover from this disaster when new construction starts it will be the same shoddy methods and won't be resistant to collapse so this will happen again in the future.

Re: The deal in Haiti...
I agree Omega, Hopefully it won't but a poor country usually gets poor construction.

Re: The deal in Haiti...
Even with the best construction, Haiti is right on a fault line, when Mother Earth says "move over" stuff falls......... We think we have "earthquake proof" construction methods in California, Japan, etc. but they haven't actually been tested with "the BIG ONE" yet. Personally I don't think we can build such things.......
If Haiti had better construction before this quake things wouldn't have been as bad, but it would still have been devastating.
