UK News: David Cameron is UK's new prime minister
Conservative leader David Cameron is the new UK prime minister after the resignation of Gordon Brown.
Mr Cameron, 43, is in Downing Street after travelling to Buckingham Palace to formally accept the Queen's request to form the next government. He said he aimed to form a "proper and full coalition" with the Lib Dems to provide "strong, stable government". ____________ Source: BBC News |

I'm not up to date on UK politics, but I assume that Cameron and the Tories can't make it much worse than it's been with Blair+Brown. Cutbacks and tax raising almost mandatory either possible way. Or how do you brits feel?

Re: UK News: David Cameron is UK's new prime minister
As a british student it's good to see there's a party that's at least vaguely considered students. But to be honest not enough is being done, It's difficult for students to find work, Let alone keep it when we need to focus on our studies. The EMA (Education Maintenance Allowance) scheme is in tatters, I'd say 3% of people at my college get paid on time, Then they end up missing a day of college because they don't have enough money to get in and they never get paid again.
Fair enough the money has to come from somewhere but we'll survive in the mean time until the economy is stabilised and more provisions can be made for those of us struggling with money. As the young, dumb, single minded person i am however, I'm glad to see labour finally out of parliament and their reign of terror against the country's economy and armed forces coming to an end. British soldiers are being killed almost every day over a war we shouldn't even have taken part in at the start, But because Blair had his tongue so far up Bush we ended up getting involved and we ended up not only losing troops but losing money as well to fund the operation we've got no place to be involved with. Brown + Blair's solution of throw money at it until it goes away should finally be behind us, Unless of course Cameron decides to take the same approach at which point i can see things going very, very, wrong in the United Kingdom. I'm honestly surprised we didn't see riots as the recession deepened in the UK. |

Re: UK News: David Cameron is UK's new prime minister
Labour's reign of terror is a bit strong - they get terrible press mostly as a result of the centre right's dominance of UK media and simply being in power for so long, but they've done nothing terrible (remember that the Tories were most keen on the war) and lots that's really very good. I'd agree that we shouldn't be in Iraq/Afghanistan, but the Liberal Democrats were the only mainstream party to support that view.
The economic crisis in the UK was nothing to do with the government here, it was an international crisis with which Britain dealt with unusually well considering it's financial sector reliant economy. Ok, our recession was relativley long lasting, but it was never that harsh, and unemployment is still quite reasonable. If you want to see economic failure look to Spain, not the UK. Brown's legacy will be looked upon reasonably favourably in years to come. Having said that, I am glad to see a non Labour government - they had ben in power for too long and change is needed, particularly political reform. I voted Lib Dem with this in mind and am slightly disapointed to see them jump into bed with the tories. Hopefully, though, this unlikely coalition of Liberals and Conservatives will work out and last. Only time will tell.
