Pakistan blocks access to YouTube in internet crackdown
Pakistan has blocked the popular video sharing website YouTube because of its "growing sacrilegious content".

Access to the social network Facebook has also been barred as part of a crackdown on websites seen to be hosting un-Islamic content.

My reaction to them doing this is just, Meh.

How about they shut down all the groups of people in Pakistan blowing shit up? Isn't that un-Islamic too? Killing of people?

Then worry about youtube and facebook.

It is kind of like that, but worse. None of the online content can reach you unless you go to a specific website and personally, I've seen very little blasphemous content. Oh, I'm sure that there are heaps of it, but I don't look for it and it doesn't seem to be able to find me on it's own very well.

I would not have known about the Facebook page that invites people to draw pictures of Muhammad had it not been for this ban and the article about it, and now that I know of it, I still have no urge to visit it, so I don't see how it put any good Pakistani in any particular danger. Therefore, I see very little point in this, as the websites and all the "troubling" contents are there just as they have always been, it's just the people of Pakistan who can no longer access a lot of good stuff because someone wanted to "protect" them from bits of contents which, in all likelihood, they would not have been watching anyway.

Its all about control of the masses, censorship and control of information. Its a very ignorant view IMO, because its not the content that is the problem for them but people accessing the content which makes no sense at all. My policy is this if you don't want to see it then don't click on it ...

Pakistan has partially unblocked the YouTube video sharing website, but hundreds of its links to "blasphemous content" remain barred, officials say.

The BBC's Aleem Maqbool in Islamabad says that YouTube is now working again, although internet downloads have been slower than usual.
