Libya Internet Shut Down Amid Protests
Reports have emerged late Friday that Libya appears to have shut down its Internet due to widespread protests, less than a month after Egypt did the same.
The Los Angeles Times was among the first news outlets to report Libya's Internet outage, citing "multiple reports." TechCrunch also posted about Libya's Internet issues. Libya first began shutting off social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter and the news website of Al Jazeera before taking down entire Internet providers. Internet authority Renesys confirmed late Friday "Libya is off the Internet." ________ source: The Hufffington post

Re: Libya Internet Shut Down Amid Protests
I am very proud of the people in so many countries in the broader region are finally doing something to take back the control of their countries from families. I watched earlier some footage from Libya and Bahrain with people demanding more rights and even democracy. I don't care if in the short term there are issues (perhaps even anti West). In the long run a truly democratic Middle East is a good and peaceful Middle East. It's about time too that the people there finally got the message that if you want freedom, you have to fight for it. Europeans did it in the past, it's good to see them doing it even now.
I just hope the bloodshed is as minimum as possible.

I'd be surprised to see any kind of revolution though - if they get unpopular enough their own MPs will trigger a vote of no confidence in the House of Commons, in an effort to save their own seats.

Yeah things are going south in Libya. Our foreign minister Mr. Stubb is saying that EU should put economical sanctions against Libya and visa ban for Mr. Gaddaf.

Re: Libya Internet Shut Down Amid Protests
I don't get the attacks on foreign citizens in Libya. I've heard of an attack on workers of a South Korean construction company, as well as a camp where our (Serbian) citizens are (also mostly workers of construction companies, working in the scorching Libyan sun, making water supply systems and other infrastructure for Libya - nothing to be mad about really). I guess that no one is safe in that chaos, but still strange choice of targets for a progressive, democratic movement.

This regime will rather bleed and starve out the people than give up power. Mercenaries are carrying out drive-bies and other armed attacks. Anyone in Libya are in for hard times.

Re: Libya Internet Shut Down Amid Protests
Well I suppose there is darnel in every wheat field, here in 2000. things went fairly well, but a few took the chance to loot the parliament when the mass hurled in. Fortunately for us, there was very little violence though, as the police and military refused to intervene, which was the cue for Milošević to admit defeat (one unfortunate man did lose his life when he fell out of the parliament window, but it was the tragic result of his euphoria, not an act of violence).

What has been found left in Ben Ali's palace in Tunis,
you have to wonder if that's what he left , How much he managed to get away with.

I am very worried actually thanks to stupid Qaddafi, I guess this won't end unless he got killed and his sons. I am also worried about posible military intervention by US using the excuse of protecting the people of Libya.

Re: Libya Internet Shut Down Amid Protests
You guys understand that a lot of this tyrannical behavior that influenced these revolutions was nothing short of encouraged by the U.S. Government, right? So by proxy, we're pretty much vulnerable to a revolutionary movement; yet, most Americans would be more upset if they lost their Sharper Image gift certificate.
Our time has come. You call down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind. Hopefully, most of us still have the physical and mental capability to stand up from our down-trodden, broken, and weak-willed dispositions to fight the menace of oligarchical dominance. BE READY TO STRAP BREAD TO EVERYTHING! |

Re: Libya Internet Shut Down Amid Protests
Yea , I think it is one of the factors of american worries that the new regimes will try to be more agressive towards them to prove to their people they aren't like the old ones which had a bit 'strong' relationship with U.S. Anyway, it is hard to determine where we things are heading even by us.
The middle east is very important for US because of many reasons actually, the most important one is the petrol and you have seen when Egypt experienced the unrest that could have stopped oil shipments through suez canal, oil prices went high. Again , this time with Libya which is a oil-rich country , oil extraction is nearly halted atm and the oil prices went high. The worst nightmare for the US now is the revolution-infection reach the gulf countries, not only because they are rich of oil but also rich of US bases as well. BTW, clashes between protesters and the police in Oman started since yesterday. I've lived in Oman for three years and still can't imagine people there would revolt. I thought they were satisfied with their regime but you would never guess.

Re: Libya Internet Shut Down Amid Protests
Not that I trust the man too much, he has been claiming that Al Qaeda is behind the unrests ever since the unrests started; also, Al Jazeera (not that they were the only ones) has been feeding inflammatory misinformation about the situation there from day one (so all of our citizens who were evacuated from Libya say).

Maybe, I don't know. Aljazeera was in some cases a bit exaggerating the situation here in Egypt as well.

Re: Libya Internet Shut Down Amid Protests
i laugh whenever anyone anywhere in any position mentions osama bin laden .... he hasn't poked his head out in a video or for ANYTHING since the 90's attacks... there's been ZERO evidence since. FBI agree and CIA agree with that. It's a confirmed FACT... yet it's repeatedly spewed by lieing politicians and Media broadcasters and shit.

Re: Libya Internet Shut Down Amid Protests
Yemen president apologized after he blamed US over the unrest in the mid east. Seriously, these guys are dumb enough to blame everything but their dictatorship or they are playing dump.
@ Senor Mota : what pisses me off and most people here as well that the police presence still very weak, there are thugs and robber who abuse these conditions and kidnap people and kids sometimes or even kill them. And since here unlike US people aren't allowed to carry weapons. it just don't feel safe at all.

Also, comparing the images I've seen from Libya with those from Egypt, Egyptians looked like people desperate for their freedom and when it was over, there were grown man crying tears of joy and relief, whereas in Libya the freedom fighters look more like out of control mobs and paramilitary groups. People can't carry weapons everywhere in the US.... there's a lot of places they can't, but criminals still do.
