Bahrain GP
Bahrain F1 grand prix gets go-ahead despite widespread opposition | Sport | guardian.co.uk
Five concerns for Formula One teams over the Bahrain Grand Prix | Sport | The Guardian Should the BBC (or insert local broadcaster here) refuse to air it? Should the teams refuse to go? Should governments refuse to lift the current "inadvisable" status of travel to Bahrain? (Posted in political subforum because that seems closest. Obviously there are strong arguments for placement in the "Petrol Heads" or "Off-Topic" subforums, so feel free to move this thread.)

Re: Bahrain GP
Why "should"?
To punish the government of Bahrain for not being democratic? You might as well ban the whole of the middle east, and china, etc. What matters is, is it safe? If I were a ruler of Bahrain I wouldn't want it to take place. Having thousands and thousands of people gathered where there is lots of international coverage...yeah...

Re: Bahrain GP
"Should" because the event going ahead constitutes an implicit acknowledgement of the hosts (Bahrain's government) as legitimate and worthy of doing business with.
You make a good point that Bahrain are not the only nation in the world to host a sports event while being undemocratic, but I was thinking more of recent atrocities, which surpass even what the likes of China has achieved in a long time.

Re: Bahrain GP
With Iran having a direct interest in the country, do not expect any kind of major hits to the Bahrain government by the West.

Re: Bahrain GP
Iran takes more major hits than not hosting a F1 race itself (sanctions, embargoes etc.).
I think more important considerations are the vast oil wealth of the nation and the fact that it's the base of the U.S. Navy in the region. Neither of those are in the direct interests of F1 teams and broadcasters, however.

Re: Bahrain GP
I don't think you got why I mention Iran.
The ruling house of Bahrain is of the minority of the population. Those protesting are the majority. The majority is also the same as the Iranian majority. Figure out the rest on yourself, you are very clever.

Re: Bahrain GP
Ah, I see. You're right, I misinterpreted you. Again, though, such issues are not in the direct interests of F1 teams or broadcasters. Hopefully some of them have a conscience.
