Yes, because it sets a bad precedent to deny him the money - what next, criminal background checks on anyone who wins the lotto to see if the lotto runners can just keep the money instead of giving it out? "Sorry, you have one minor parking infraction, no money"? Bad precedent, like I said.

Yes,
but he should not be able to use it (bribes), until he is discharged from prison, who cares if he has live a sentence, he should have stayed on the decent path. Or he should appeal on account of his sirname, life must have been though

"Hoare, originally from Leeds, is nearing the end of his life sentence after being jailed in 1989 for attempted rape."
WTF? A life sentence over there doesn't mean life guess- And why did they let this guy out to go buy a ticket in the first place?

Generally lifers nearing release are released on a gradual basis, eg this guy was out for the weekend when he bought the ticket. What interest me is that everyone here has vosted 'Yes' and yet public opinion is running very high on both sides here in the UK...

well yes, he won it by chance, his background, age, gender, race have no bearing on lottery. There is nothing people can do to stop this, all this issue is is the media trying to make a story out of nothing (UK papers do that often if im not mistaken)

Anyway-- I think the guy should be in prison for a lot longer than what he is for what he has done, aside from that viewpoint, if the law let him out, he has every right to keep the money just as anyone else would. He sounds like a moron so he probably won't live very long anyway-

[QUOTE=BWX]Damn, no death penalty and "life" is 15 years? So if I kill a guy that looks at me wrong and get life I can get out in 15 with no chance of death? What a great deal!
I guess we should be very happy about the fact not many people who think like you live here in Europe.

He should be able to touch it right before it goes to bank to pay for victim compensation.

Yes, let him keep it. He won a lottery - where everyone has an equal chance at winning.
Now of course, he is rich enough to be sued succesfully by his victims. So at least one person instead of an animal can benefit from the win. |

As was said earlier in this topic, disallowing him to collect his winnings will be setting a bad precedent. Also, I believe if they deny him the money he may have some legal options as far as suing to get his money because of discrimination.

Incidentally, my take on the lottery win thing is that if you are eligible to buy a ticket then you are eligible to win. Lets face it, for many people the only donation they are ever going to give to charity is via the lottery. And no-ones ever complained about taking money from convicted criminals who play the lottery... What I don't understand are the people who are calling for him to pay for his prison costs etc. As a nation we do not require prisoners to pay for their keep so why should this guy be any different?

Well, the dozy mare of a wife (he also MARRIED while inside) who he managed to con that he was a bank robber (didn't she ask anyone else what he was in for?) may relieve him of half of it.
And under certain circumstances, the statute of limitation on damages can be lifted, the fact that he had no money at the time, and now does, would seem to suggest that a judge should look favourably on letting previous victims claim for physical harm and mental trauma. If gambling (which the lottery is) was against his day release conditions, then that will also go badly for his parole. Actually taking the money away by any other means - well, that would be as controversial as letting him keep it. If the guy actually had a brain cell, he would have kept it a bit quieter and not been so cocky. An interesting point though - who would you trust to look after a £7m prize ticket for you? |

What you have to think is that if they didn't want him to keep the money then why did they let him out of prison at weekends!!!!

I think he should be able to keep it. But if I were the woman or man that he raped I would get a civil suit together and sew his ass.

I agree with most of you. He won it so it’s his to keep. The moral issue wether it is fair for a rapist to get 7million is debateable but if it is legal then good on him! If it were up to me murders and rapists would get 30yrs to life, atleast.
This might interest some of you, here in nz some of our worst criminals like murders are claiming compensation for THEIR human rights being 'violated' (locked in solitary confinement for too long and stuff). At least one murderer has already got NZ$55,000! If they have been mistreated then the guards should be punished but any financial gain should go to the victims/victims families. What has our justice system come to? |
