Big Grin "Michael Moore Exposed"

Moore Accused of Bribing Students To Vote; GOP Asks Prosecutors To File Charges

By Jimmy Moore
Talon News
October 6, 2004

Republicans are accusing liberal film producer Michael Moore of bribing college students with various gifts in exchange for voting and asked prosecutors on Tuesday to file charges against him for violating election law.

Moore, whose controversial Bush-bashing movie "Fahrenheit 9/11" was released on DVD on Tuesday, has been traveling across his home state of Michigan to various college campuses in support of Democratic presidential nominee John F. Kerry. During the visits, Moore is said to have offered gifts to students who have never voted before as an incentive to cast their ballots in the November 2 election.

However, Greg McNeilly, executive director of the Michigan Republican Party, claims this is in direct violation of election laws prohibiting bribery in exchange for votes.

"We want everyone to participate in this year's election, but not because they were bribed or coerced by the likes of Michael Moore," McNeilly said to the Associated Press, explaining that he has asked four county prosecutors to file charges against Moore for his illegal efforts to recruit new voters.

Describing these college students who have not voted as "slackers," Moore is confident these votes will make the difference for Kerry in next month's election against President George W. Bush.

Moore is in the midst of a 60-city tour where he is requesting as much as $50,000 per speaking engagement along the route.

As part of his program, those who have not voted before are asked to come on stage and pledge to Moore that they will vote. Young student voters who just turned the legal voting age of 18 are offered various gifts such as free underwear, a year's supply of Tostitos, and packages of Ramen noodles if they make the pledge to vote, McNeilly contends.

McNeilly said the Wayne County prosecutor's office should prosecute Moore for contracting with these students for something of value in exchange for their agreeing to vote.

Wayne County prosecutor's office refused to comment on the investigation.

In a related story, conservative political action group Grassfire.org has released a new parody called "Michael Moore Exposed" which will help "counter Moore's efforts to hijack the election."

This humorous cartoon clip reveals the group's belief that Moore's motivation for his liberal activism this year has been his intent focus on the money he has been able to make off of being against Bush.

I think that has something to do with so few young people choosing to vote these days.

He's trying to make a point no one else is, that alll in all, no matter who you vote for, voting is still a good thing.

Now if the gifts were conditional on them voting for a specific candidate, that would be illegal. But giving someone a free CD if they agree to vote for whoever they want I doubt very much would be illegal.

I don't know if it should be encouraged. But he is a publicist and this was no doubt little more than a publicity stunt. If all of the major parties did it, becomming a student might suddenly seem like a very good thing.

Personally a goody bag from any republican would be unlikely to make me change my stance on anything very much. After all, I'm hardly a child.

Now if they wanted to give me a villa and a few million bucks I might consider it - but that's a lot of villas and a lot of wonga (cash) to give away to a lot of people before you are liable to make much of a dent at all in an election.

The problem with you guys is that you imagine that just because you can be bought so cheaply, so can everyone else.

It absolutely astounds me that young people in the US need to be bribed to vote. I understand the US has one of the lowest voting turnouts out of all Western democracies. Pretty ironic, considering the way many (not all) tout the US as the freest country on earth???

Very strange for me coming from a country where 99.9% of people vote (Australia). By the way, in Australia voting is compulsory. Some might consider that UNdemocratic, but I think democracy is about access + PARTICIPATION. No participation, no democracy. very few people complain about voting however - those who don't care usually give a 'donkey' vote, ie randomly pick a number, also this is obviously not endorsed.

I find that article absolutely astounding also. Moore is accused of bribing people to VOTE, not bribing people to vote democrat. Candidates bribe voters all the time. After all, what are election promises? By extension, what McNeily really seems to be taking objection to more young people voting? Tacit acceptance they will vote democrat? Funny how no one else reads it that way.

Logla has a spectacular aura aboutLogla has a spectacular aura aboutLogla has a spectacular aura about

So lets get this straight, he's bribing people to actually use their vote rather than bribing them to vote a particular way?

If he's trying to get them to vote in one particular direction, yeah, hang him.

If he's just trying to get them to actually vote then this is a good thing.

Not enough people vote over here in the UK and its a big problem.
The whole point of democracy is to elect a leader who represents the people. If half the people dont vote, you dont get a decent representation of the populus.

Man, Republicans are all upset again. They'll stoop to any low level to attack anyone who expresses thay are not for Bush. Last night Hanity of Fox's news show "Hanity and Combs", put his foot in his mouth. Hanity had been saying on previous broadcasts that Kerry flipped floped with his stance on the US invasion of Iraq. He said Kerry said in an interview (which Hanity had with Kerry) that Kerry supported Bush's decision to invade Iraq, but now Kerry has flipped flopped. So, last night Hanity replayed the telephone interview he had with Kerry. It turned out that kerry has always said that he supported the removal of Saddam if it was done at the right time. He just didnt think that it was the right time when the US invaded Iraq.

After hearing the interview again, Hanity siad: something to the effect of "awl man, I thought he said he supported Bush's invasion, awl shoot!" That's bad! Hanity bashed Kerry over and over for days before millions of viewers due to the fact that Hanity had his facts wrong about Kerry's stance concerning the Invasion of Iraq. Now, all Hanity has to say is "awl shoot, I misunderstood Kerry??!!! Hanity needs to keep announcing to his viewers that he made a mistake. Things said on news shows has the potential to influnce voters, so it's not fair just for Hanity to say "awl shoot, I made a mistake." It would be fair for Hanity to make it clear to his viewer that he made a mistake concerning Kerry. It's just things like Hanity's mistake that's painting a bad view of Kerry to many Americans, but that paint job is a false message about Kerry. That sucks and that type of thing needs to be stoped!

No, don't hate Micheal Moore, don't hate Bush or Kerry-

HATE THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE

Electoral College=The people's votes don't mean sh!t

All those commercials telling us to vote, make your voice heard, yadda yadda are all bullsh!t. It's all just a plot to convince you that the people are the ones making all the stupid decisions in America...and that your decision, your one little vote is what will make the difference. Well, that would be true, if it weren't for the electoral college.

BURN YOUR STATE ELECTORAL COLLEGE 2004
