Which chipset will your next motherboard use?
There have been a whole load of new chipsets released recently. Which one takes your fancy as your next upgrade? (Or if you bought a board in the last few months what does it use?)

I am not all that happy with my IP35 Pro. As usual Intel uses "fake SATA" which they have been doing forever. Basically the hobble them unless you run them in RAID so you get ICH9 not ICH9R, so no NCQ and nothing close to SATA II speeds. Its fussy with memory(not just the Abit board either)
I personally think my Opteron 170 on my Abit AT8 32x is a faster and ALOT more stable setup all round. I would love to get another AMD/ATI chipset board but until they sort out their current CPU issues I guess Im sticking with my E6660/IP35-Pro warts and all.....

By default I think NCQ and advanced SATA features are enabled on all newer ICH series.... I could be wrong I will see if I can dig up where I read that.

In fact having messed about with it, the fastest overall is actually running it in IDE mode and letting it run it usual "fake SATA"

Currently P35. Next board will be either P45 or 780i. Depends on how powerful nex-gen videocards are going to be.

Which chipset will your next motherboard use?
voted Intel X48. but still want to try Intel P45 chipset board. otherwise my next motherboard buy would likely be the next Intel chipset family after the Intel X48. |

I didn't vote, because I don't plan on ditching my Gigabyte P965 DS3 r3.3 anytime soon. I think the chipset that I'll get next is sill unknown or doesn't exist yet. If I had to replace it now, then I'd get a P35 Gigabyte board probably.

I actually just picked up a MSI P35 Neo about a month ago. It has been mostly a 'stop gap' purchase after dealing with some RAM issues on the previous board I was using.
But, I've been mostly quite impressed with this board and have even been able to overclock some things a bit more than what was possible with the previous one. I've used it for a full month now and finally had to activate Vista before the activation period expired. I was also quite pleased with the price: $89 after mail-in rebate from Micro Center. |

i've been leaning towards the p35 myself currently.
if for whatever reason p35 is no longer available or whatever the case may be, i might look into either whatever intel chipset or NVIDIA chipset boards are out at that time. |

I think I'll try out the x48 when released,my 680i board has been good to me can't complain didnt have the problems most suffered with this board.
I was considering a 780i or 790i board but since I want a new wolfdale cpu I'll go back to intel's chipset and mobo combo, their usually stable and rock solid.

For reasons of features, price, and power consumption...
If (hopefully) buying by March or so, it's a P35 board. Should it be later I'll have to do some more homework to see what the market is like then.

I need some help to answer. I'm planning on getting a Q9550, if it comes out january 20 but I don't know which chipsets are supported. Anybody care to share their knowledge with me?
I found that the previous Core 2 Quad processors supported the 975X, P965, X38, P35 and maybe others but I did not find any specifics for the new processor. EDIT : I just searched a bit more Inttel website and it says the following for the Q9550 : G33 Express Chipset, G35 Express chipset, P35 Express chipset, Q33 Express chipset, Q35 Express chipset, X38 Express chipset I don't think that's a complete list. I've read people talking about the X48. |

You also have to make sure specific motherboard models support it as well. MSI for example, has the QX9550 as "under testing" for X38 boards but "supported as of..." for P35 boards, and even then most P35's have the QX9770 as "no." It shouldn't be a problem in the long run, 'tho.

I changed my mind. I'm not patient enough. I just ordered a new rig with a X38 chipset and a E6750.

Just picked up a new Nforce 6 series mobo for my new pc, they didn't have the ram and monitor in stock, so hopefully they'll be coming in this Wednesday as promised.

Curently I am running a P35, and I don't plan on changing for a while, This has everything I could want on it, with the exception of 2 X16 PCI express lanes.

Probably none of those, my nforce4 board is still working fine, I'm not planning to upgrade in the time period of any of the current chipsets.
