I voted for free. I believe that 90% of converter software in general should be free. Either because most of it is subpar coding at best and I believe that I shouldn't have to pay for it and because I don't think that you should have to pay a large sum of money just to be able to convert file types.

I voted the second option even if it is offered as shareware the developers should get something back.

Mostly using VirtualDub and HandBrake... But if I would find some good shareware product that would work for my need and it would be cheap I would buy it.

That is very true I agree with you there. The thing I don't understand about some of those developers is the amount of money that they end up making on the back end in site ad sales and they still have the nerve to charge a fortune.

Free.

I use free/open source formats and containers, and am happy doing my work at the command line, so I don't see much room for anyone to sell me anything there.

Re: With all the talk of Video Converters/Transcoders, you prefer them to be:

Having immersed myself in A/V converter software the past month I have to mention that I am amazed. Four years ago, you couldn't hardly find a free DVD player - for Windows at least...

The amount and quality of free, open source, codecs and front ends for those codecs originating with the Linux community is awesome. The Windows apps developed using them is just outstanding and extremely practical. From Handbrake to Super, and many others with varying levels of complexity and user friendliness in between, I can't thank the makers of the software enough in helping to merge the worlds of AV and IT and allow millions of computer users much more usefulness - and fun!
