it may reduce spam lol, i think it'd be pretty cool like for a problem that may be extensive and step by step have irc there andhelp someone througha problem, plus talking to fellow dhers in real time

i like irc, but i fear all the vunulerabilites and such that come with it...it's MUCH more labor intensive then a forum if you plan to keep it clean and respectful and such

I don't care about IRC, but I liked the chat function- even though I just accessed it though a java console. I don't think it matters how it happens, IRC or not- the chat was cool.

Yeah true- and sometimes it is a lot easier to discuss certain problems via chat- so it is a good addition to the site in general..

DH did have a IRC web based utility did it not? I used it because I was lazy to open and configure mIRC. Is it possible to indicate that people are in the chat through the forums? One of the reasons why I didn't check back into the chat was the fact that no one was there when I got in. Well, people were there, but they didn't talk to me. It was like I came in a farted.. and everybody ran away.

i'm guessing that DH had a chat thing going on. I'm indifferent to this only because i don't know the impact(s) it had on the forum. There should be an "indifferent" (or something similar) option in the poll.

It worked great for Futuremark (madonion), used to be a friendly good laugh place with plenty of folk to help out, did get full of knobs now and again though. I think it's a good idea, prolly doesn't take up too much bandwidth or you can use an already existing server. Prolly work best with a few mods from different time zones and a Bot in there.

Don't see no reason to not have one unless it becomes time consuming and expensive, people tend to get a faster response (if it's busy enough) with their more urgent problems.

mmm IRC is actually my primairy form of communication save for speech

I'm on IRC about 90% of my free time. It's not that i chat constantly but me being in a gaming-clan, or actually leading a clan, is the reason i need to be reachable for people. IRC is great for this because you just can join and idle and whenever anyone needs you, they just query you and you'll here a sound a get a popup with their query and you can have your private conversation.

It's a great and easy managable medium, with options that predate and outdo any other chatapp/protocol.

The downside of irc is that it's more difficult to grasp for new users, things like auth, preform, channels and so on are overwelming and confusing for 1st time users. Also NEVER click any url that was given on irc save for adresses you really know (like driverheaven.net), the problem is that there are a lot of people infected with irc-bots/trojans that spam the url which gets you infected. Don't worry tho it's no doomsday app, it's just like email, don't open unsollicited attachments/urls.

So imo, get it back. preferably on Quakenet so i don't have to open multiple servers

Maybe the IRC channel can be integrated into the DriverHeaven site... kinda like how GameSurge has that Java applet integrated into the page. But yeah, I think it would be a good idea, especially for simple questions and answers that you don't want to make a thread for.

byt your talking to some one that can be on 18 hours a day, and usealy it was a gost town....

only time there were many is if there was a schedualed chat other wise no one was in....

there were several people tht logged in and then left thier pc's, they din't come to chat more to log etc...

like killersneak refurd to comments I had made in there.. You don't know who your talking to in thier ither anyone cold have thier name showed as a common dh member, when really thier some one else...
