short term: copy to second IDE harddrive
long term: burn to DVD

for serial #s, policy #s, etc for insurance/warranties I send an e-mail to myself -- that way if my house burns down its stored offsite. i may have lost the paper copies, but at least i have a record of the unique identifiers.

I voted DVD Burner but I use Power Quest Deploy Centre to keep x64 and 32 bit images on my second hard drive. When it takes my fancy I re-image my computer using boot floppies in a couple of minutes. I keep meaning to burn a copy of these images to DVD.

I usually don't backup, but since my secondary drive is larger then my Boot drive, I use that when I need to. Like I will soon, since I'm moving over to PCIe, rather cheaply too.

Cool! Internal Storage.

I have 4 internal HD's. So I use my 30GB for Windows, 80GB for games, 60GB for all of my files, and my 40GB I have partitioned into 2-20GB, one for WinXP64 and the other for "let's test this OS".

I am looking to get a 200GB network HD to put all my files, so my GF and I can access all the files in one location.

I primarily use a DVD writer for permanent backup, and the external hard drive for temp backup.

Here's a question I would like to ask everybody: what programs do you guys use along with these devices?

For me,
- hard drive backups (images or cloning) = I usually use Ghost or Acronis (I find Acronis the best for NTFS spanned images, and SATA cloning as Ghost can mess up real fast. One thing about Ghost is that it if you clone a Dynamic partitioned drive it will undo it, and turn the partition back into a Basic one.. very useful as trying to convert a Dynamic disk back to a Basic one, or importing a Dynamic disk can have some rather.. um.. bad consequences if it messes up)
- email/favs/settings/specific folders/misc = Genie Backup Manager Pro
- straight file copying (folders/files) = Total Commander (newer version Norton Commander)

Edit: should have mentioned I use Nero for backing up data to DVD.
