I like and have programmed a lot in flash/director, but have avoided using it on my site because of the size of files that it can dish out. Nowadays, many more people use DSL or cable and was wondering how big should a single page be to make it still respectable to download (html, css, images and others)?

If you're aiming it at DSL/Cable users, I recommend no more than 500kb (preferrably 300kb). For 56k users, I recommend you limit the size to 100kb.

The easiest way is to publish the flash file by configuring it publication of an html file. Then press publish (I think its F9 or F12). It will create a SWF and a HTML. All the code you need is in the html file.

Place the flash file in any directory you want. Just make sure you link to it in your index.htm (or whatever your index page happens to be).

Oh, and I think the size of your site should depend on the purpose of the site. A news site should load quickly, where an artist's portfolio would probably be longer since it would be most likely chock full of images in the design.

you can use this code
<object classid="clsid 27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=4,0,2,0" width="400" height="300"><param name="movie" value="YOUR_FILE_NAME_HERE.swf"> <param name=quality value=high> <embed src="YOUR_FILE_NAME_HERE.swf" quality=high pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/index.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="400" height="300"> </embed> </object> You will have to make the path to the swf correct for your site structure, and make the height and width correct for you swf. The Smiley Face is the Colon and the letter D yeh does anybody know how to paste code in here without the board using it for smiles like rem statement or something? |
