Question about Cost of Having Own Webpage/domain

I have a question about how much it would roughly cost per year to have the following set up.

I am on an online golf team and there are 3 major "tours". Each one is set up by a individual and paid for out of their own pockets. How it works is you play a game goto the site, select your name, put in your password, then you scroll down to select your opponent. The scoreboard is updated automatically. Id say there is roughly 30 teams and about 600 or so total people but alot are inactive. The one tour is shutting down and the guy is claiming it costs him about $1800 per year to keep it running. I dont see how it is possible to cost this much, but I could be wrong. What do you guys think?

hosting/domain name is about $125 a year, so the rest would come down to the cost fo the site, which i honestly don't know how much that would be as the only site's I've ver had I made myself.

$1800 a year sounds a little bs to me; $180 seems more reasonable I'm sure you can get domain names, etc. for cheaper than $180 though.

what about maintenance of the website costs? like adding/replacing HDDs, and electrical bill. cuz how is a site going to run off of just the domain name by itself? it needs a place to be hosted at. so i'm thinking more in the range of the $300-$500

some places offer hosting for 10 or 15 dollars a month, and a domain name with it for 30-40 bucks per year. for a simple low-traffic site, that's all it would take.
features like php, etc. may add a few dollars more to the price.
and of course, for more transfer or storage space (for a bigger/busier site) the plan prices would go up.

my server is ~11GB bandwidth(they don't actually measure, but if it gets to the point that it causes a problem, they will bill you for it...but the guy said 11-15GBs a month is no problem at all), 500MBs hard drive space, scheduled backups(i don't use it, but you can have ti backed up daily, weekly, etc, if you so choose) and a domain name, pop3 email(unlimitedaddresses @yourdomain), and options for databsing if you need it all for $125 a year

http://nexpoint.net/products/shared/linspecial.cfm

they also offer a cheaper package(75 a year i think, but you only get like, 2GB bandwidth and 50MB space), or all the way up to full blown dedicated hosting(100+ a month )

50GB bandwidth
1000 email
PHP (or ASP/ASP.net if you choose windows hosting. I'm not sure if windows hosting has PHP)
1000MB
Pretty good service

I used to work for PayPal tech support for websites/paypal buttons

I always sent people that would ask to this Hosting company http://www.saratogahosting.com

It is hard to put a price on knowledge isnt it. If I knew how to create a web site and I knew you were wealthy, or that you were going to make a lot of money from it. I may charge you just for The site a one time fee of a large sum. I used to listen to a lot of people with horror stories paying thousands of dollars for a web site that I wouldn't even say my dog made. Pages that maybe took someone 5 minutes to do and charging ridicioulsly amounts of money for. I felt really bad for them.

If the website is getting a lot of ' hits ' Then with advertising you could probably get the site to pay for itself. If there is a lot of downloading or file transfers, I can see where the bandwidth could be costing a lot. Lets face it- Hard drive space and whether or not the company supports the script language you want to use is nothing compared to how much bandwidth costs.

Unless the site itself is generating a lot of money I do not see why what you describe would cost in upwards of over 1000 a year. Sounds to me like someone is greedy weedy.

I would presume that someone is charging a fee for updating the scripts that handle the database of people and their opponents. Because I really do not see where the large fee is coming from unless its bandwidth like I suggested. So far you simply described a login script- and a script to update a database. These are not difficult things. But if you don't know how to do it..and you need it... how much would you pay?

Slow in some places though...

Ideally, you do want to be hosting in the same country as your users (that is, the physical location of the web server) - doesn't matter one jot if the domain name is local or some island with an interesting suffix.

For an international site, US based hosing is probably as cheap as any, and SHOULD have good connectivity - My path from NTLWORLD, via COGENTCO, to DH at EV1, is absolutely flaming useless!, leading to DH running like a snail on valium for me - I know 300k isn't hyper-fast, but it feels like dialup or worse - far too much "dead time" before it actually starts to move!

www.1and1.com. I never looked for anything other than that. Very generous space/bandwidth allowance, excellent support. Domain names are 5.99 a year per registartion, and 9.99/mo for very good hosting plan.
