Delphi and C++ advice

Hi,

on my current degree course I have a module using Delphi 5 for this year, but next year's module is C++, so I want your opinon's on whether I should stick with Delphi and learn it beyond what's required by the module, i.e. self learning, or should I jus' stick to what is required for the assignments and start learning C++ now in prep for next year, and make that my primary language? well other than English.

I'm not wanting to become a programmer as like a career or anything, so it's jus' freetime hobby sort of thing,

Discuss.

cheers

UberLord will become famous soon enough

I'd go for C++ as it's more portable than Delphi.

On the other hand...

C++ is more portable indeed, but with Kylix you can compile Delphi programs in Linux. And C# is just like Object Pascal ;-).

Well my Delphi assignments are pretty much over now, except the final year exam this week. So then I'll be moving onto C++

If you want recommendations for good C++ books, I have a few lying around, and a few of em are pretty good I've been teaching myself from "Object Oriented Programming in C++" 4th ed. by Robert Lafore (SAMS) so far, very good book, best layout and rate of introduction I've ever seen, and it doesn't assume that you are going to have problems with every damn basic concept that comes along like some other C++ books...

If you are not going into serious programming I would stick with delphi. It's a good language and fairly easy to master. And it is a very powerul language with Borland always improving it. A cool program that is made in it is ZoomPlayer go to www.inmatrix.com

But if you are more serious or really want to do something cool C++ all the way. There is pretty much nothing C++ can't do. But it is a little harder to understand and gets a lot more complicating when you try to learn the more advance stuff.

i have a degree in both and altho c++ is way more portable and you can do alot more with it, delphi is leading the number of projects in my firm. Delphi is very very fast, has a .net compiler and looks alot like c# because its the same lead programmer that made the two environments. I'd say c++ for thoroughness and delphi for speed. Since you need c++ next year, i'd brush up on that mfc is a real bitch

Delphis a good language. but then I'm biased after making a living from it for the past 6 years. Its certainly easier too learn than c++
