UberLord will become famous soon enough

Depend what you want to program.

As a profession Visual Basic developer, I can safely say that although it's an easy language to learn try and avoid using it.

Instead, go with multi-platform languages such as C/C++ (fast applications), Java (slow appliations but more portable) or PHP (web scripting language).

But then it depends what you want to program - as that dictates the language

Games - C/C++
Applications - C/C++ or Java
Web - PHP

Try and avoid M$ based stuff as that locks you into the Windows platform. You can got loads of other stuff to develop for windows

Definitly learn some HTML first. You need to know HTML before starting with PHP, as PHP just outputs into HTML, which you need to write. This site runs on a modified forum software package, which wouldn't require a lot of work, but make sure you have at least basic HTML knowledge before diving into a forum package such as vBulletin or Deluxe Portal, as you'll need to make sure you aren't wasting your money. I'd say give phpBB a try (www.phpbb.com) and see if you can get it to do what you want, then maybe look into getting a forum package, or even sticking with phpBB, and if you feel you have sufficient knowledge of HTML, take up trying to code your own PHP web applications. Have any questions, dont hesitate to ask.

no, it is $80 1 year leased license, or $160 up front, plus $30 per year for upgrades.

phpBB seems to be treating me nice, plus it's free (and if you know a little bit of coding, you can completely change anything you want!)

php based websites aren't THAT hard to program...simple pages that is...if you know HTML fairly well, find a good PHP resource and stuff and if you know how the mechanics of internet coding goes...you might be able to figure it out decently.

But to program a site such as this would require considerable time investment, hence why this site uses a modified version of an already existing forum.

There aren't really any great Windows compilers. *nix, on the other hand, has a lot of nice compilers. Take a hint.

...

No love for Perl and Python around here, neh?
(That'd be a great first language, heh... "Okay, I've mastered Perl, now time to learn Basic!")

-+Ahem+-

From my experience, HTML should be learned before any "real" language... it helps you learn many of the basic concepts.

A bit of C++ is useful for almost everyone... the basics are easy to nail down, it's in wide use, plenty of free compilers and IDEs... makes it a good choice for a first programming language.

(Or, you could be like my 0ld sk001 homiez and learn Pascal, heh...)

Isn't perl kind of like a derivative of C++?

Advice

I just started to learn to program myself, and it is REALLY fun in my opinion. However, I have a few recommendations about things that I learned the hard way: Don't try to program beyond your talents. I had a dream of making my own 3d engine. Ok, sounds somewhat simple, it wasn't going to be anything overly special or complex - I spent a month coding, but I didn't know enough, and so I wasted about a month during which I could/should have been working on my code and making other stuff that worked and helped me learn. Also, don't try to learn to program for Windows or Linux at first unless you are using Visual Basic or some other MFC/GUI based programming language like Vb. Command line programming may seem boring, but it makes you focus more on whats going on inside your program instead of the "prettyness" of the program's output, which should really be a secondary consideration when you are learning the language. Good Luck!

I consider programming a crappy necessity, I'd rather draw my website on a piece of paper and have it look like that...then have to program it for like...ever?

To respond in order:Yes, it is!---- Uh... yeah... (looks around nervously)--- Uh, yeah.... (looks around nervously)--- unfortunately, yes, about 15 of them, before discovering I'd rather be a very fat man with very weak wrists than a very broad man who can play "La Cucaracha" with his knees.
