Dell & the 2007WFP / FP
I wanted to give everyone a heads up, and spread the word about these two new displays that Dell has put out on the market.
Both the 2007WFP (widescreen) and the 2007FP have massive color gradient banding problems. I have personally tested this display and can attest to this problem being true. To anyone that was thinking about purchasing one of these models, please head on over to anandtech and read this thread first. http://forums.anandtech.com/messagev...VIEWTMP=Linear |

I haven't really noticed any problems with mine.
Update: Hmm running one of the tests (http://xtknight.atothosting.com/lcdtest/), and I'm seeing more banding /w the 2007 but it's not really bad. Update 2: Mine seems to do well with colors. However, the worst for me is Gray 2. Last edited by Necrosis; Apr 22, 2006 at 10:23 PM. |

i didn't see any issues with the dell 3007's.... Looked utterly steller... so i'm guessing different lcd display parts?

Wish I my digital camera wasn't borked. I'd do a nice shot of what they're talking about. I still like the display quite a bit. However, I think I will voice my concerns /w Dell though.

Can't get the spec on the number of colors - bummed. Their other displays do 16.7 million...

i thought ALL displays did 16.7 million, as that's 32 bit color....which is really a hybidized 24 + 8 bit in funtionality, but that's not the point

nope...
some displays use 16bit (655360 color) ..and dither it to make it look as close to 16.7 million which imo, is a joke... mind you it'll generally look better then straight out 16bit. Why they are still making displays like that in highend sector .. i don't know.. they should be shot for it....

nearly all lcd manufacturers.... they still make lcd display using and only able to do 16bit color with dithering... it's cheaper...and really, some people don't even notice it... or care.. (hell i know someone using 16 color mode.. not 16bit.. not 8bit... no no no... straight away 16 colors)

Viewsonic and Samsung both do, among others - gotta watch it - Tipstaff educated me some time ago in his posts on the subject... His take is that they're sacrificing some color fidelity for transition speed.
An example: Viewsonic 924 another: Samsung 940B Both are popular and highly rated monitors for various reasons - but lack full color fidelity - which could conceivably cause some color transition "edginess" or "banding" under certain conditions and/or while viewing certain images - I would think those images containing very small changes in color values across the span of the image - like maybe a night sky?

Yeah Judas, just checked (Dell 3007wfp) - 11ms grey to grey rated response time displaying 16.7 million colors. It is intended for use in pre-press editing, digital photographers, CAD, and (of course...) gamers - picky folks all. Jeez, 2560x1600 resolution - needs a Dual Link DVI (DVI-D) video card...

What is a good 20 inch wide screen display then? I was looking into this monitor since my work gets HUGE discounts on dell as we are a big ditributor for our systems.

i never liked their 2005, always rated the 2001 as a better monitor, I found terrible brightness issues with a few 2005's I saw. They seem quite a touch and go company when it comes to new monitor releases. some of them are brilliant like the 2405 and some are poor.
Incidentally for those members reading this wondering how they can test their monitor in an effective way, download this free application http://www.ykwong.com/ (checkmon) and follow the tests in the panel. its small and really useful. I will also state one of the best results ive seen in that app from a TFT is on a Sony VGN FE11m Xblack - the colour results are some of the best ive seen on any TFT (and ive seen quite a few). |

Hopefully that one will work. The simple answer to your question would be yes, since it's wide screen. Honestly the "updated" 2007WFP is just as good if not better to be honest. My 1905FP really showed the age of the 2001FP's panel. Now they're dead even if not better on my 2007. |
