wow! how does the e8400 compare to the current e6xx0 CPUs? what would be a comparable CPU to it?

Well it runs cooler, clocks higher, has 2mb more cache (4mb more for the quads).

The E8400 will easiliy outperform an E6850, stock. Most E8400's I've seen are doing 4GHz no problem.

OMG! i know what my next new processor is going to be then!!! can't wait for my tax return!

i think i might just go DDR3 on this due to the 1333 FSB. or could DDR2 still do a 1:1 ratio @ 1333 CPU FSB? i would imagine that the memory speed would need to be OCed for 1333 or higher if OCing unless using some kind of divider like 5:4 or 4:3 or similar.

I seriously thought hard about DDR3 this build. But what my research led me to was that the even with DDR3, most X38s can't overclock any higher. and the extra memory bandwidth barely makes a different in performance at all.

so you're saying hold off on the DDR3 for as long as possible?

no problem! i won't be building this new rig probably until mid to late spring at the earliest.

Microcenter's been real good to me. I bought my Q6600 two weeks ago for 270 dollars and the next week, they drop the price to 200 dollars. I went there again to buy a new mic and on the way, I showed a sales rep my receipt for the Q6600. In short, they gave me 70 dollars back without a word.

Their pricing on certain items are excellent and their staff is educated about the products. Though the only flaw I've seen is that it's perpetually out of E8400's like everywhere else.
