I think most consumers these days just go for products coz of their aesthetics rather than their value. It's not right any way you look at it, but what can you say? It's their money afterall.

As for laptops, if you happen to know how to build a custom notebook, by all means let me know.

btw I built my own box. It really is better, and I found it to be much cheaper. Plus you get the pride of having a machine that is different from everyone else's machine(even other custom builds)
Of course, point well taken, and perfectly sound!
Its a shame that labtop components are not readily made available to suppliers.
Alot of companies will unfortunatly go for the best price on a bundle lot.
This is where you have no choice but to go Big Box, but when faced with such an unfortunate situation, price is not always the issue, but rather support should be top on the list. I would buy an Acer Labtop if it meant low turn-around time & top notch support(just an example).
What Dell has done in this case is pathetic! And very much within their level of professionalism based on the amounts of horror stories I've heard.

I just got off the phone with the support supervisor, who told me they can't send someone to my house because it is not in my contract, so I have to be without my comp for another week, possibly till next tuesday or wednesday while I send it to them. I am so damn mad right now, I could burn the place down, if I could catch a flight to india or wherever they outsource to. I HATE DELL! I can't beleive they are treating customers this way. If I did at my job, I would be fired immediately.
More for ya, and I don't mean to beat a dead horse, but this is unbelievable.

I got the comp back yesterday. I looked at the record of what they fixed, and they replaced the DVD/CDR device. Yes, they still didn't fix the video or motherboard problem. I don't know where they got the think with the DVD player, but they fixed that, even though I just had that replaced. So I turn the thing on, and get an error saying there is no boot file and blah blah... So I triy to repair, end up reformating, and get a black screen with a curser blinking. Tried to reseat the RAM and whatnot, still busted. Not only did they replace something new on my computer, they fuckin broke it. Just thought you all would like to know. Thanks for reading.

well im not sure where you get your facts from, unless its just this "word of mouth" thing that spreads from people who just hate prebuilts and this stems over into the laptop sector.

Dell make some great server and laptop systems, especially the high end business or gaming sectors. I have access to many laptops and there are very few which meet the standard of chassis design of the higher end latitudes. The Dell Latitudes incidentally are the only laptops that survive the UK torture tests, an independent testing system which involves, taking the computer into extreme cold, heat, then dropping it on its edge onto concrete from a specific height. Alienware dont pass that test, neither do Voodoo or any of the other "cool" makers.

Now im not defending Dell here, as I think their desktop machines leave a lot to be desired and have much room for improvement, especially the fact they still are using propretiary PSU designs which make interchanging impossible.
However I do feel its important to address some key issues which I think are just "user snobbery" at times, especially when the facts are frequently totally the opposite of what im reading. Ive 4 laptops in the house, 1 Voodoo, 1 a sony superportable, a Dell D505 and an Alienware im testing. The dell laptop is a great machine and has a very effective cooling system without creating too much noise, the chassis, build design is also great. Also do you guys know Driverheaven is a Dell poweredge server? 2 gig of Ram, dual 74 gig scsi hard drives, twin xeon ...... T3 line. Thats a kick ass server with a same day replacement under failure.....

So, while im not saying Dell are any better than the other wonderful laptops i currently own/or am testing they are certainly no worse.
