![]() I just sent my laptop to dell to get the video card, touch pad, and some stuff replaced. Got it back in a good amount of time. Well, they didn't replce my video card, they replaced the CPU and heatsink. OK, as long as it fixes my problem, lets see... So I pop in a cd (CoD) to see if the 3d is messed up like itwas before. The CD doesn't work, yeah! Will they were fixing the thing, the ruined the optical drive. now thats customer service. So I call them, spend 45mins on hold, tell the guy what I did to trouble shoot, he doesnt understand me, nor I him. An hour or so later, he comes to the conclusion that I did. "Well Mr Erickson, we are going to send you a new optical drive", "Thanks Genius, your damn right you are" So what happens next, you got it, another 25mins on the phone waiting for duder to get back to me, just for him to say. "OK, it will be there Monday afternoon" Grrrreat, another weekend without my laptop, Thanks Dell! To all those who might read this post, never and I repeat, never by a Dell, unless you like to spend years of your life talking on the phone, and sending your computer in to be fixed. I wish I would have heeded those words when they were told to me. Thanks for listening to my rant. |

One good thing came from it though, They put a processor that is 3.2ghz instead of 3.06ghz and the new one has HT, or so the Bios says.

Well, imo.... if you can't get a prebuilt from dell, you can't get a prebuilt period..

i still love my acer laptop and old hp destop.
that old hp is a pavillion 742n, 512MBpc2100, AMD Athlon 2000+ Xp, and a 32MB integrated geforce2. not bad for 2 years ago. and remember that i slapped a radeon 9000 in it...that baby flew. i felt like there wasn't anything i couldn't play.

I wish my pal could see this, I'll direct him to this thread-the guys' obsessed with Dell, he thinks it' s the best thing since the sun. I don't know what the hell's wrong with him, but even when he sent his laptop to the fixers and they bust his CD-ROM drive as well, he just said "Well at least they're giving me a new one" and I was like

LOL, My mom called countless times for customer service on her Dell desktop only fuck the pc up more till I got home from my friends and oh boy gunna reformate for the 13th beeping time. I swear I wonder how the hardrive is still alive after all the formating becuase of Dell customer service noobies that read it all out like a book and go through countless steps to fix a simple problem. They only seemd to ether make the problem worse or make more problems till were the whole OS is f'd up.
You have my sympathy..

The customer support at dell is kind of like an old college CS teacher, you know, one that still uses the machine with 8mb of ram.

You got that right. 8mb of ram in those shity old ancient machines that still have the turbo button on.
Don't get me wrong tho, those were great in their time and day, but now.....well......you know.

I have a friend who used to work for Dell support out of Florida. He makes me sick with his Dell is the god of prebuilds. I think I'll direct him to this thread
. If it makes you feel any better my nephew got a sweet Alienware laptop for a early Christmas present. It had problems from the beginning and he has wrestled with tech support that could barely understand the English language. He finally sent it back after a three hour conversation that revolved around the tech and supervisor. It appears Alienware may have nice computers but lousy tech support as well. He now has a IBM laptop although I am coaxing him to let me help him build a desktop.

Well, here is an update. Got the part on tuesday, installed is and reinstalled windows. Once I put all my stuff on there, I tried a 3d screensaver and... the f*ckin thing is still broken. The video card was never replaced and the problem didn't go away, big surprise. I just got off the phone with the support supervisor, who told me they can't send someone to my house because it is not in my contract, so I have to be without my comp for another week, possibly till next tuesday or wednesday while I send it to them. I am so damn mad right now, I could burn the place down, if I could catch a flight to india or wherever they outsource to. I HATE DELL! I can't beleive they are treating customers this way. If I did at my job, I would be fired immediately.

you know whats really funny?
So dell computers are suppose to rock...so are Alienware...so are Sony... all have shitty tech support and dozens of horror stories. My brother got a Compaq laptop...yeah those ones that are suppose to blow chunks...and the one time he had a problem with it wasnt with the computer, but rather turned out to be a prob with windows. When he called Compaq(or rather HP) tech support, he got fast, easy help...and it was all in proper english!

Every manufacturer and customer support service make mistakes, lots of them. I understand your situation sucks and why you hate dell, but you got the short straw buddy. I've heard alot of bad things about dell's support in the states, but otherwise i've heard nothing but good things about dell LAPTOPS. Personally i've had one for almost 3 years and it kicks ass. I've used it hard and the only time i called customer support was to order a better graphics card, and they gave me no problems. When i do buy a new laptop, it's definately going to be another dell.

well it does sound extremely annoying, but as long it's still covered then i guess you have to send it in. Otherwise it's pretty easy to take the thing apart yourself and replace whatever needs replacing. I was surprised how easy it was, and dell even have a manual online with detailed instructions on how to go about it. I hope it finally gets fixed and you can start enjoying it!

Now as far as the dropping...most of you are probably saying "well duh!! dont drop them!!" well at CTI theres alot of running around with laptops so once in awhile they'll get dropped . The harddrive usually fries, meaning anything they have done in the last 15-30 min is gone(the harddrive backs up to a SAN). So they need stuff that'll at least save SOME parts(like the HDD). They got Toshibas which are more expensive by a long shot, but I was up there and one guy tripped and his laptop skittered a good 40 feet across the room, banging into the wall at the other side. Still works like a charm. The steel casing is really nice, and i dunno toshibas just seem to be good quality. Plus they dont have outrageous corporate techsupport fees. As far as the desktops, I know that there are plenty of big companies in seattle that'll use the desktops. Since you wont be dropping those anywhere. So far I've seen that Boeing has a mix of Dells and IBMs in their statistics department. Then again, I havent been there in a few years, so maybe not the same now.

This is why its nice I build and service my own machines!
If you know someone that can build and service a PC for you, then for the love of god do it! I've heard and seen so many Big Box stories its made me sick.. You might pay a little more for a custom built PC, but man its worth every penny. I have a small client base, and they are all very satisfied with my work, because when I do software or hardware work on their property, I take the time to explain what is being done, and educate them on how to solve a great deal of problems themselves. And this makes them feel confident! |

As for laptops, if you happen to know how to build a custom notebook, by all means let me know. btw I built my own box. It really is better, and I found it to be much cheaper. Plus you get the pride of having a machine that is different from everyone else's machine(even other custom builds)

umm yeah, i don't run around much with my laptop, and i'm sure a steel case is great, but laptops are typically designed to be light. and no i don't know a lot of people who make their own laptops
