HardwareHeaven recently got chance to pitch some questions to Andrew Dodd - AMD's Software Product Manager for the Catalyst Software Suite. Including questions from members of the HardwareHeaven forums.

Re: AMD Interview with Andrew Dodd (CatalystCreator) @ HH

A bit of a let down, really. I'm personally a single GPU, single monitor user and for all of my intents and purposes their software suite does what I need, yet it seems disappointing that AMD doesn't seem to have any sort of ambition to bring anything new to their drivers.

I'm not a 3D enthusiast and perhaps AMD doesn't think that the technology is going to get any mainstream adoption either, but stating that they see no need to put any effort into it as there are 3rd party solutions for the purpose in a situation where those 3rd party solutions are, if HH is to be trusted , far inferior to what Nvidia users get out of the box, is, like I said, very disappointing and the rest of the answers seem to follow the same tone.

In the end, the only things AMD GPU users can look forward to in any foreseeable future are the tessellation slider (neat) and (another) redesign of CCC (which is all nice, but it's just a shell to the actual product).

+Rep for that.

I have to say, I don't use ATI GPUs on any of my own PCs atm, but a few family member/friend's PCs that I end up maintaining and/or have built do have recent AMD solutions.

The CCC seems, and this is really the only word, amateur vs the Nvidia driver interface.

Sigh. Interesting for a large portion, but the community Q&A seemed to be full of canned responses. The lack of 3D is going to seriously hurt them in the future.

And they need to stop trying to make the CCC look cool, and first try to make it functional. It doesn't matter if you polish crap, it's still crap.

Re: AMD Interview with Andrew Dodd (CatalystCreator) @ HH

I'm still wondering when they are going to supply us with automatic power saving option when using a dedicated GPU and an onboard GPU. This was put in the press release prior to the HD4xxx series being released and its still not here.

I know fusion has power settings but over half of AMD's chipsets have on board graphics, the new APUs have built in graphics so the proposed settings to switch on a dedicated GPU only when it needed it (for gaming as an example) would mean the system as a whole would draw less power, generate less heat and reduce system noise through the GPU fan not needing to work. Essentially this makes a hybrid HTPC/Gaming PC with dedicated GPU a viable option.
