Alienware M11x R2 Review

Alienware M11x R2 - External Appearance (Closed)

The Alienware M11x has an external appearance which is similar to the M15x and M17x. This is partially due to the colour scheme used but mainly because of the front edge of the system which features the same illuminated performance car style grill. The lid has been slightly redesigned since those machines were produced with a more angled cut-away but we still have the Alien logo including light up eyes. Also worth noting is that this new model, in black, features a rubberised external shell rather than gloss plastic which is used on the rest of the range.

At the left edge of the machine we find the majority of the M11x's connectivity which has changed a little from the first revision. Gone is the VGA and the rest of the components have been shuffled around which means we have a Kensington Lock slot, DisplayPort then HDMI, USB 2.0, Atheros AR8132 100Mbps LAN, Memory Card Slots (MMC, SD, MS Pro) and finally IEEE 1394a. Turning the system round we find two further USB 2.0 ports and the audio out sockets for the on-board Realtek ALC665 5.1 audio.

The base of the system is almost entirely flat and over 3/4 is made up of one single panel. At the front edge (top on the picture) we have two perforated sections which allow air into the system and sound out. Beneath these is Alienware's plaque which is etched with the consumers name prior to dispatch and at the four corners we have raised rubber feet which stop the system from moving on a desk as well as allowing airflow around the base. At the bottom left corner is an air intake vent which sits above the M11x's single fan. Air passes in here to cool the CPU and GPU before being exhausted out the back of the system.
