ASRock X58 Extreme6 Motherboard Review featuring the Intel Core i7-970 Processor

ASRock X58 Extreme6 Motherboard and Intel Core i7-970 Processor

It is hard to believe that the Intel X58 chipset has been around for 2 years but in a month or so that will be the case. From a very solid basis that chipset has served Intel and motherboard manufacturers well, scaling as new processors were released to now support the 6-Core Gulftown CPUs. During this time motherboards based around the chipset have also evolved, now including SATA 3 and USB 3 functionality as well as extreme DDR3 speeds and additional PCIe connectivity.

In recent times there has been quite a battle going on between the major manufacturers to see who could push the X58 furthest with boards such as the Gigabyte X58A-UD9, MSI Big Bang and ASUS Rampage 3 Extreme taking specifications to extremes. ASRock also offered a high end board in the form of the Extreme3 but it seems that wasn't quite extreme enough for them and so today on our test bench we have the X58 Extreme6. Offering more connectivity and more features than the older model it is designed to take on the best X58 boards out there and today we will be putting it up against the Gigabyte UD9 to find out how well it compares.

In addition to the ASRock Extreme6 we also have Intel's latest i7-970 CPU to test. So join us as we put some ultra-high end kit through its paces in real world testing which includes SATA3 and USB 3 performance, CrossFire Eyefinity and 3-Way SLI 3D Vision Surround gameplay in addition to our standard tests which include encoding and media playback.
