Zotac ZBOX Review (HD-ID11)

Back at CES 2009 we were shown a product at the Nvidia booth which, to this day, is still one of the most impressive we have seen at any show. It was clear from the short while we spent looking at the item that it would be a complete game changer. That product was the initial prototype of an ION system which was able to sit comfortably in one hand and offered features such as HD playback, 7.1 audio and HDMI out.

In the months following that systems based around the design began making their way into retail products and one of the manufacturers at the forefront of this market segment was Zotac. Since then Zotac have been refining their Ion based designs and recently moved to the Next-Generation ION platform on a number of their products. One of these was their ZBOX, an all-in-one type design which allows the user to install their own hard drive and memory.

Today we have one of the ZBOX systems on our test bench and have run it through a selection of real world tests including HD playback, GPU computing and media encoding to find out whether it can meet the needs of consumers looking for an all purpose mini-system.
