AMD Radeon HD 6990 4GB Graphics Card Review

Having the fastest graphics card available can be quite a money spinner for AMD and NVIDIA, the kudos that comes from having that top end card filters down through enthusiasts and word of mouth to sales in lower specification parts. Because of that, in past generations we have seen sales swing backwards and forwards between the two manufacturers as their various architectures took the lead at one point or another.

Then in the most recent generations we had something a little bit different, AMD had the fastest "Graphics Card" in the form of the 5970 however NVIDIA had the fastest GPU with the GTX 580. Both could stake some claim to having the best, highest performing part and for some time now AMD seem to have been quite happy with the price, performance and features of their dual GPU model, refreshing the products below it.

Now, several months after the release of the 6800 and 6900 series, we finally have the release of the card which replaces the dual GPU 5970, a product designed to be the fastest single PCB based graphics card on the planet... and one that might just beat two of the competitors when those are using SLI.

That product is the Radeon 6990 and today we will be putting it up against the GTX 580 and 570 (with SLI) as well as the 5970 to find out how the new card from AMD compares. As well as the standard 1920x1080 tests we will also cover 5760x1080 on all products, 3D Blu-Ray, GPU computing, power, noise, temps and overclocking. Top that off with some of the latest titles such as Bulletstorm, Crysis 2, Dragon Age 2 and Total War: Shogun 2 then we have pretty much everything we need to know about the new card.
