OCZ RevoDrive 3 X2 (480GB) - Bootable PCIe Solid State Drive Review

Looking first at the build quality of the RevoDrive 3 X2 we have a product which gets all of the basics right. We have an uncluttered PCB which is bolted to the daughter board in a very secure fashion. The product is filled with high quality components such as Sandforce controllers and Micron chips but it is probably the OCZ controller which is the most impressive item on the RevoDrive.

OCZ's new SuperScale storage accelerator offers us many of the features from the previous generation of RevoDrive such as four Sandforce controllers in a RAID configuration but takes the consumer experience one step further. A prime example is the support of TRIM which some users found to be an issue with the last generation of RevoDrives... now we have that feature, or will when Microsoft enable it for this device. We also get to take advantage of the ability to Secure Erase our drive to maintain performance and firmware updates will also now be easier, being performed in Windows rather than Linux.

The VCA 2.0 enabled controller also enhances performance through OCZ's proprietary Queue Balancing Algorithm which minimises CPU use and maximises internal bandwidth. The end result of using these controllers and this NAND configuration is a drive which offers incredible performance in a number of scenarios. It is for example a video editor's dream and offers industry leading performance in multi-threaded environments.

So that brings us to value where a drive which costs £1200/$1650 will be too much; far above affordable for most. However this truly is a case of getting what we pay for as nothing comes close to competing with the RevoDrive 3 X2 for performance.

Crazy fast, completely stable, feature packed and unbeatable.
