MSI GT70 Dragon Edition Laptop Review

MSI GT70 Dragon Edition Gaming Laptop Review

Over the past few years we have seen some pretty spectacular motherboards and graphics cards from MSI. The Big Bang XPower 2 X79 board was one particular highlight... what more could you want than a motherboard with bullets for a heatsink??? And on the GPU side the likes of the R7970 Lightning was one of the best Radeons we have tested, if not the best. So MSI may well be best known for their excellent range of motherboards and GPUs but for the past few years they have also been taking the mobile system market extremely seriously. Whether that meant some interesting ultra-portable systems or the chunkier Core i7 based GT683DXR there was some real progress being made.

MSI's latest foray into the gaming/enthusiast laptop marketplace is the GT70 Dragon Edition. With components including the latest Ivy Bridge i7 CPU, SSDs in RAID, GTX 675MX Graphics and 16GB of memory in a 17" chassis... and some great extra specifications, today we find out whether the system can play the likes of Far Cry 3 and Hitman: Absolution.

Packaging and Bundle

Most manufacturers go for a plain brown box with their laptops but not MSI. Instead we get a reasonably compact box with cool dragon design which also highlights some of the gamer features. Inside the cables and bundled items are stored in their own compartments with the system suspended in cardboard and wrapped in various layers of protective material.

Bundled with the system is of course a battery and in this case a LI-ION model rated for 7800mAh and 87Wh. The power brick provided is manufactured by Delta Electronics and is a substantial unit in both size and wattage, 180w in this case.
