PlayStation 3 Game Roundup Decemeber 2012

In the run up to Christmas and the holidays Sony has recently released a number of games under their publishing arm. Today we take a look at four of them to see what they offer for those looking at last minute gifts or something to pass the time.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is a cross over fighting game featuring a number of the well-known characters from various PlayStation games. We can take on the guise of characters as diverse as Kratos from the God of War series to Sackboy from LittleBigPlanet. The game allows us to play through a traditional single-player mode, arcade style with each of the available characters. There are also multi-player modes for both offline and online play.

The game offers an interesting style of fight play, in that each character doesn't have a traditional health or hp bar, instead we build up attack power by hitting our opponent which allows us to unleash a super attack which, if it connects, kills our enemy. However most of the single player matches are timed, so if we are killed or kill our opponent we simply respawn and keep on fighting. The player with the most kills when the time runs out wins the match.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale provides a fun, alternative fighting game which will engage causal fighting games fans or fans of the various PlayStation characters. As an added bonus the PlayStation 3 version of the game includes a downloadable version of the game of the PlayStation Vita.

Ratchet & Clank: QForce

Ratchet & Clank: QForce is a third person adventure game offering us the ability to play as either Ratchet, Clank or Captain Qwark. The game offers a simple storyline, involving a deranged fan of Captain Qwark turning off the world defence shields for a set of planets and our hero's setting out to switch them back on before bad things occur. At its heart the game is a tower defence style, making us protect our base and its power cores while waves of enemies attach us. At the same time we have to scout out from our base to collect scrap to buy or upgrade our base defences and complete various set tasks to allow us to switch the planets defence shield back on.

The game is simple in its execution and the story mode is fairly limited in single player mode however the co-op play, either on or offline is more engaging. Like PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale this game also allows us to download the PlayStation Vita version of the game, however it will not be available until January 2013.

LittleBIGPlanet Karting

LittleBIGPlanet Karting offers us the chance to take our little Sackboy, stick him or her in a kart and have a huge amount of fun. From the moment the intro video narrated by Stephen Fry (who also does most of the voice over work in the game menu and instructions) hits we get the usual irreverent style that we have come to expect from the LittleBIGPlanet games. LittleBIGPlanet Karting gives us traditional go-karting pick up and play fun with a nice single player storyline mode or the online play. Like other karting games LittleBIGPlanet Karting has weapons and defences to help us or hinder our opponent.

User generated content is key to the LittleBIGPlanet games, and the Karting game is no exception. We can create our own tracks and customise our little Sackboy and his kart. The track editor is excellent and allows us to create our own tracks, weapons and game rules, all of which can be uploaded and shared through the PlayStation Network. The game is only limited by our own imagination, however if we are running a bit short of ideas we can always hope online and see what others have done.

Sports Champions 2

Sports Champions 2 is the final game in todays round up and is, unsurprisingly, the sequel to Sports Champions. This is one of Sony's big PlayStation Move titles for 2012 and has us use single or dual Move motion controllers in a range of sports which include Boxing, Bowling, Skiing and tennis.

Clearly a competitor for Wii Sports and Kinect Sports, Sports Champions two has some decent graphics which usually exceed the quality/cartoonish-ness of those other titles and the dual controllers offer an interesting depth of control. We had particular fun with the aforementioned Ski-ing and golf games but for family/party play it's hard to beat bowling... archery too offers an interesting challenge and a change of pace to the normal sports titles.
