Plextor M5 Pro SSD Review

The Plextor M5 Pro SSD

The M5 Pro uses an all metal casing and is a 7mm thick drive (69.85x7x100mm) weighing in at 70g. It has a top surface that features the brand logo and flipping the drive over reveals an information sticker on the centre. This notes CE and FCC approval as well as information on the manufacture date/firmware and beside it we can see the SATA 3 power and data connectors.

Inside the M5 Pro we have a green PCB and on one side we find eight 19nm MLC NAND Flash chips which are branded Toshiba with the part number TH58TEG7DDJTA20. A further eight are on the opposite side of the PCB and these sit beside the Nanya DDR3 cache chips. The other major component of note is Marvells 88SS9187 controller.

The Marvell 88SS9187/M5 Pro features double data protection which confirms that each piece of information is correctly stored using 128-bit error correction. This is then backed by a Robust Data Hold-Out Algorithm in Plextors firmware for enhanced results. Plextor also note that the controller is one which supports AES 256-bit, certified by the US government.

To ensure reliability Plextor have an enterprise level Zero Error Standard which requires 400 units surviving 500 hours of testing in their facilities under strenuous tests. The before each drive leaves the factory it must pass a burn in test along with accelerated operating simulation. Tests such a 48 hours of constant read/write, cold/warm boots and hibernation (4000 times) are part of the reason that Plextor offer a 5-year warranty.

Finally, in terms of official speeds, Plextor rate the M5 Pro for up to 540MB/s read, 470MB/s write with 100,000IOPS read/ 88,000IOPS write. TRIM, garbage collection and Marvell Instant Restore Technology is of course supported and Plextor advertise their long term speed maintenance as "TrueSpeed".
