PC Power and Cooling Silencer Mk.III 850W Power Supply Review

The Silencer Mk.III - Inside

PC Power and Cooling Silencer Mk.3 inside

Inside the Silencer Mk.III we have a black PCB which is reasonably well packed with components including two large heatsinks. Where appropriate components are given extra stability by white adhesive, wiring it tied in place and plastic separators keep items apart. High quality components are used throughout including Japanese capacitors which we will look at shortly.

The Silencer Mk.III range also has several features which combine to protect the PC components in the event of a fault developing. First up is Over/Under Voltage Protection which ensures that the 12, 5 and 3.3v outputs do not exceed a set level. Over-Current Protection works on the same outputs to ensure DC voltage remains within safe limits. Short-Circuit Protection is also present which powers off the PSU should any of the 3.3v, 5v or 12v rails short any other rail or ground.

PC Power and Cooling use a Globe Fan inside the PSU and it is a ball bearing model running on 0.40A. The part number is B1402512H which tells us it has a 1500rpm maximum speed. As noted earlier there is a fan switch on the back of the PSU and this allows us to select two modes. In the first the fan is always on and temperature controlled. In mode 2 it is fanless up to 50% load and temperature controlled as required.

In terms of key features we have a unit which has one +12v rail rated for 70A and PC Power and Cooling mix this with an 80 Plus Gold certified spec which means it has passed certification of 88% efficiency at 20% and 100% load with 50% load rated at over 92% (240V).

We noted earlier that this PSU uses high quality components such as Japanese capacitors and these include 400v-390uF/400v-330uF Nippon components rated for 105°C. The use of 105°C parts continues throughout and the quality of soldering is also of a decent level.

Other Specifications/Features of note are:

Active PFC - 0.98
Input Voltage - 100-240V (Auto)
Warranty: 7 Years
MTBF: 100,000 hours
Safety: cTUVus, CB, TUV, CCC, C-tick, GOST, China RoHS, WEE, RoHS, FCC Class-B, CE, BSMI
