ATP Petito 2GB
ATP appear to be trying to offer everything through their Petito drive. The Petito is a small and very elegant flash drive, measuring only 36x19x7mm (LxWxH) and weighs less than 8gr, therefore someone could easily mistake it for a trinket. We received the pink version but it is available in several colors: gold, silver, dark blue and titanium grey.
You should not let the small size or graceful appearance deceive you; the Petito is actually an ultra fast 200X flash drive, utilizing the fastest available flash technology (at time of writing). If the good looks and extremely high speed aren’t enough for you, ATP’s SIP technology also makes the Petito drive waterproof, shockproof and dustproof.
Despite all the good things about the Petito, the lack of an activity LED and the extremely simple wristband reduced our initial excitement. The software found with Petito is very simple; it can only lock the access to the drive (or a portion of it) with a password.
Kingston DataTraveler Mini Fun 2GB
You will find the Kingston DataTraveler Mini Fun being one of the strangest designs in our round-up, much like all DataTraveler flash drives it is supplied without a bundle. The design of the Mini Fun is surely innovative, but we are not sure if this is always a good thing. The dimensions of the Mini Fun are 38x19x8mm (LxWxH) which make it a rather small flash drive, but it is designed to resemble a childs toy. The cap can be inserted at the rear of the drive while you are using it to prevent loss. The Mini Fun drives are colored depending on their capacity; our 2GB drive is purple while the 4GB drives are red.
Having an USB flash drive which looks like a toy is cute but we feel this will alienate the device from a large market sector, for kids only? We think so. Kingston preload two games developed by Big Fish studios on it, Sudoku and Atlantis, a rather interesting concept. You can attach a lanyard at the bottom of the Mini Fun, right where a dim green LED data access light can be seen when using the drive.
Lexar JumpDrive Firefly 4GB
Lexar produce many different USB flash drives and the Firefly is physically their smallest design, aiming to provide large storage capacities while being small and convenient for the smallest of coat pockets. The Firefly is supplied without any bundle and it measures 48x20x9mm (LxWxH) with the cap on and is available in six colors with six capacities. The design of the drive itself is simple with the Lexar logo engraved on it. The cap is transparent and can be inserted to the rear of the drive during use.
The entire rear part of the Firefly is actually a large blue data access LED light. When the transparent cap is inserted at the rear of the drive and you are accessing or writing data to it, it is made obvious why Lexar named this flash drive Firefly. There is a spot at the edge of the cap where you can tie a lanyard to, and you should not worry of the cap coming off accidentally while carrying the drive around as the cap locks to the drive very firmly. There is absolutely no software to be found preloaded in the Firefly.
