North Q 3340WLA Extreme

System Configuration:

  • CPU: Core 2 Duo E6750 (Overclocked: 450MHz FSB, 1.45Vcore, 3.6GHz)
  • Motherboard: Asus P5K3-Deluxe
  • RAM: Kingston DDR3-1066
  • HDD: Samsung 160JJ SATA2
  • VGA: eVGA 7900GS
  • PSU: Ultra X-Pro 750W

We decided to test the cooler by using Arctic Silver Ceramique instead of the bundled thermal compound because North Q have bundled poor quality paste and we wanted to ensure the focus was entirely on the cooler. We left the system working in order for the thermal paste to stabilize for about 6 hours. We tested the cooler by running it directly connected to the PSU at full (2000RPM) and at minimal (1100RPM) speed. CPU load was achieved by running Prime95 torture test (blend) and Super Pi simultaneously for 30 minutes. The idle temperature measurements were noted after the system was resting in the windows desktop for 15 minutes. Ambient temperature was maintained (as accurately as possible) at 19 degrees Celsius at the time of the test. SpeedStep is disabled.

Although the thermal performance of the 3340WLA Extreme will not be setting any new standards, it performs very well. Depending on the rotational speed of the fan the 3340WLA can compete with many other popular CPU coolers, outperforming many of them at maximum speed (obviously causing more noise). While the 3340WLA is not annoyingly loud at full speed, it is easily audible and we doubt the claims of 22dB(A). On the other hand, at minimal speed the 3340WLA is literally dead silent. With the included fan speed controller the user can adjust the speed of the fan to the noise/performance ratio which suits his/her needs.
