XFX Radeon HD 4850 XXX 512Mb

The XFX 4850 is arrives in a box which is similar to the other models we have reviewed recently. On the front we have a note of the amount of memory and that it is a XXX branded part. Included in the bundle is a DVI to HDMI convertor as well as the usual XFX items such as a Door Hanger, also worth noting is that our sample lacked a CrossFire connector.

The previous XFX Radeons we have reviewed have all featured standard ATI coolers however the 4850 XXX uses a cooler which looks significantly different to other models based on the same GPU. Although the cooler has changed, the black PCB and red dual-link DVIs which were used on the other XFX cards also appear here.

Underneath the dual slot cooler we find a 55nm RV770 GPU which contains 800 Unified Shaders and 16 ROPs. The GPU is connected to 512mb of GDDR3 by a 256Bit memory bus. Clock speeds on the XXX model are 650MHz core and 1050MHz memory which is an increase of 25MHz core and 57MHz memory, not the fastest 4850 on the market but faster than most.

The XFX 4850 XXX supports all of the standard Radeon features such as DirectX 10.1 and Shader Model 4.1. The ability to use CrossFireX is also present as is Avivo HD which features Blu-Ray acceleration and we can output 7.1 audio via HDMI if required.
