XFX
Geforce 8800 GTS
The
XFX 8800 GTS is packaged almost identically to
the GTX, only minor changes to the box and branding
give it away. Inside the box we find an equally
well protected card and an identical bundle of
extras so nothing is lost on the lower priced
card from that point of view.
The
XFX Geforce 8800 GTS is pictured above and due
to the cooler looks quite similar at first glance
to the GTX. There are a number of differences
though and the first is that the card is actually
a couple of centimetres shorter, ideal for those
with compact cases and only one power connector
is required.
The
rear of the card, looks very similar to the GTX
also however we can clearly see that there is
only one SLI connector on the PCB. Underneath
the cooler we find a G80 GPU with 96 unified shaders
which is clocked at 500MHz and 640Mb of DDR3 clocked
at 800MHz. The unified shader clock in the GTS
sits at 1200MHz. There is a minor memory bus change
from 384bit on the GTX to 320Bit on the GTS. Due
to the lower specification the PSU requirement
on the GTS is also lower than the GTX at 400w
(26A on the 12v rail). Out of interest we tried
running the GTS on a high quality 300w silent
PSU with a A64-FX60 based system and it ran without
issue so there is clearly some space for manoeuvre
in the PSU specification department. (Though we
would always recommend buying the best PSU you
can for problem free PC use).
