AMD/ATI 890GX Chipset - Introduction
In August 2009 AMD released their 785G chipset which offered consumers fantastic performance and features for a product with integrated graphics. It was possible to build a great HTPC around the DirectX 10.1 capable 785G thanks to its excellent Blu-Ray acceleration. Additionally, gaming performance when a single discrete GPU was added was on par with the 790FX chipset at the top of AMDs product catalogue.
Since the launch of the 785G Intel released a brand new chipset in the shape of the H55/57 platform which included their new "HD Graphics" architecture, in the process making their offering an attractive alternative to AMD’s 700 series platform.
Today on our test bench we have the latest chipset from AMD which they hope will be attractive to consumers, offering many of the features present on the 785G and adding to this functionality such as SATA 6GB/s. We will be finding out how boards from Asus, Foxconn and Gigabyte perform in a selection of real world gaming, multimedia and productivity tasks to find out which is worth your hand earned cash.
