HDTach / Blackmagic

HD Tach will test the sequential read, random access and interface burst speeds of your attached storage device (hard drive, flash drive, removable drive, etc). Test results from HD Tach can be used to confirm manufacturer specs, analyze the system for proper performance, and compare performance with others. HD Tach is very easy to use, quick, and presents data in easy-to-read graphs, including the ability to compare two storage devices on screen at the same time for easy analysis.

Black Magic Design make a number of industry leading video capture cards, including those which can capture HD material at very high data rates. Consequently, having a disk with a fast write speed is essential. To aid users in configuring their system for optimal captures Black Magic include a utility with their hardware which records the real world disk speed and gives the framerate available for that speed.

From these results, we can see the huge speed advantages USB3.0 has over both USB2.0 and eSATA. With USB3.0, the read speed almost reaches the speed of a direct SATA connection. In fact, we see huge gains in performance with USB3.0 over eSATA which is likely to become a redundant interface when USB3.0 becomes mainstream.

With the 2.5" hard drive we see few performance gains with USB3.0 or eSATA. This is a result of the limited performance of the hard drive, which spins at a mere 5400rpm, rather than the interface.
