Introduction

Back in March AMD launched the first of their 800 series chipsets in the form of the 890GX. This new chipset brought native support for SATA 6GB/s to the AM3 platform and refreshed the on-board graphics chipset used on AMDs high end boards. Since then the 890GX has remained the only chipset released from that family and those wanting to build a system without on-board GPU had to look at the last generations 790FX chipset. Today that changes with the release of AMDs 890FX chipset which, combined with SB850, powers all of the new high end AM3 motherboards and launching along with this is a new enthusiast CPU, the Phenom II X6 1090T.

Today we will be taking a look at the 890FX and 1090T in a selection of real world tests to find out how it fits into the current marketplace. In addition to this we will also cover some additional 890GX products and a few boards which use the new budget 880G chipset to ensure readers have the full picture when it comes to AMD performance.
